» Interconnecting wind farms | Emerging Technology Trends | ZDNet.com - 0 views

  • Wind power is one the world’s fastest growing electric energy source, but as wind is intermittent, a single wind farm cannot deliver a steady amount of energy. This is why scientists at Stanford University want to connect wind farms to develop a cheaper and reliable power source. Interconnecting wind farms with a transmission grid should reduce the power swings caused by wind variability and provide a somewhat constant and reliable electric power (or ‘baseload’ power) provided by other power plants. The idea is attractive, but will the various companies involved with wind farms adopt it? Time will tell.

Alpha Energy launches the new Solaris 3500XP solar UPS - 0 views

  •
Alpha Energy recently introduced its enhanced integrated solar power uninterruptible power supply. "As a UPS, the Solaris is the ideal solution for people or organizations wanting to minimize their carbon footprint, but have a critical power need. The Solaris lets you take advantage of free and clean solar power, and at the same time you can rest assured that in the event of a power outage, a supply of that solar energy is available for future use." The Solaris is a single-box solution providing up to 3.5kW of continuous power.

US Wind in 2009 - 0 views

  •
Building off sharp growth in 2007‐2008, US wind power development in 2009 has been impacted dramatically by the current economic climate-and US wind players must readjust their strategies in the wake of this new competitive environment. The US wind power industry finished 2008 at a record pace with 8,546 MW of new wind plant added, led by Texas, Iowa, New York, Kansas, and Wyoming. EER forecasts a sharp decline in 2009, but a rebound in 2010 and growth of 12 GW per year on average from 2010‐2020 to supply nearly 14% of total US power demand.

Clever MIT floating wind turbines can store power for when the wind doesn't blow : Tree... - 0 views

  • A single 25-meter sphere at a depth of 400 meters could store up to 6 megawatt-hours of power, so a large offshore wind farm with hundreds or even thousands of those could become a giant on-demand battery, potentially producing as much power as large power plants (it all depends on how far you scale up the idea). These anchor/storage spheres could be built on land and then brought out to sea. No need for too much super-expensive deep sea construction.Preliminary estimates indicate that one such sphere could be built and deployed at a cost of about $12 million, Hodder says, with costs gradually coming down with experience. This could yield an estimated storage cost of about 6 cents per kilowatt-hour — a level considered viable by the utility industry.

China's Wind Power Industry: Blowing Past Expectations - 0 views

  • At the end of 2007, China's installed base of wind power totaled just over 6 gigawatts (GW), making China the fifth largest producer of wind power, after Germany, the U.S., Spain and India. As a consequence of the rapid build-out of wind power projects in China, in April 2008 the National Development and Reform Commission revised its 11th Five Year Plan Period plan for wind power development from 5 GW to 10 GW by 2010.

Climate Change - What are we doing about it in Washington State? - Electrify Transporta... - 0 views

  • Electrified transportation is the use of electrical power to run transportation vehicles and related facilities. Electricity has long been used to power transportation in the Seattle area where 150 King County Metro electric trolley buses serve 14 routes covering 115 miles. Now electrical power options are spreading to port facilities, medium-duty trucks, school buses and truck stops. Most importantly, electricity is emerging to power cars and light-duty vehicles in the form of gasoline-electric hybrids and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) which can use grid power and run longer on batteries than regular hybrids. These options are explored in the FAQ below. These questions and answers are derived from a 2007 ETWG Briefing Report written by Rich Feldman, Apollo Alliance and Patrick Mazza, Climate Solutions.

6 Different Ways the Waves & Tides Can Generate Electricity : TreeHugger - 0 views

  •
When people talk about types of renewable energy they normally say something like "wind power, solar power, geothermal" and list wave power almost as an afterthought. Though it certainly isn't as developed as these other renewable energy sources, significant potential exists. Though I wouldn't go so far as to say that the reason wave power plays second fiddle to other sources is because with most ways of generating power from the ocean the technical aspects take place out of sight, below the water, maybe that's part of it. In any case, check out this slideshow showcasing: 6 Different Ways the Waves & Tides Can Generate Electricity

Next Generation Nuclear Power: Scientific American - 0 views

  •
Six page article from 2003 provides an in depth discussion on existing and Future Nuclear Systems:  "In Response to the difficulties in achieving sustainability, a sufficiently high degree of safety and a competitive economic basis for nuclear power, the U.S. Department of Energy initiated the Generation IV program in 1999. Generation IV refers to the broad division of nuclear designs into four categories: early prototype reactors (Generation I), the large central station nuclear power plants of today (Generation II), the advanced lightwater reactors and other systems with inherent safety features that have been designed in recent years (Generation III), and the next-generation systems to be designed and built two decades from now (Generation IV) [see box on opposite page]. By 2000 international interest in the Generation IV project had resulted in a nine-country coalition that includes Argentina, Brazil, Canada, France, Japan, South Africa, South Korea, the U.K. and the U.S. Participating states are mapping out and collaborating on the research and development of future nuclear energy systems."

Greentech Media | Forecasting the Future of Ocean Power - 0 views

  • In this report, Greentech Media and the Prometheus Institute for Sustainable Development address the underlying fundamentals that will determine when ocean power technologies will become competitive with other renewable and traditional energy sources, what technologies will bring the industry to that point, and how investment, government policies and power sector buy-in will drive the growth of this industry. While today fewer than 10 MW of ocean power capacity has been installed worldwide, we believe that in six years the industry has the potential to break 1 GW of installed capacity on an annual market size of over $500 million.

Storing Solar Power In Molten Salt : MetaEfficient - 0 views

  • Solar power is a truly efficient source of energy, but it tends to fluctuate, and, as you might know, it turns off at night. One clever way to alleviate this intermittence is to store solar energy in the form of heat using molten salt. An aerospace company, Hamilton Sundstra, has created a venture called SolarReserve, and it plans to have its first molten salt solar power plant online by 2010.

Solar and Wind Powered StreetLights In Tokyo : MetaEfficient - 0 views

  • We just wrote about the new LED streelights in Ann Arbor. Now we find these self-contained streetlights that generate 100% of their power from the sun and the wind. During the day, solar power is stored in a battery at the base of the light pole. At night, they illuminate while continuing to generate power via a small vertical-axis wind turbine. The streetlights, dubbed “seagulls”, were spotted in Tokyo outside the Panasonic Center by Hyperexperience. Here’s a video clip of the wind turbine in action:

EERE News: AWEA Boosts Wind Power Projections to 4,000 MW for 2007 - 0 views

  • The American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) announced on November 7th that it now expects 4,000 megawatts (MW) of wind power capacity to be installed in 2007. That represents an increase of one-third over AWEA's previous projections for the year, which were last updated in August. AWEA's third quarter market report concludes that the wind industry added more than 2,300 MW of wind power in the first three quarters of 2007, while more than 5,000 MW of wind power are currently under construction. According to AWEA's tally, 13,885 MW of wind power capacity are now installed in the United States.
