Global ageing: A billion shades of grey | The Economist - 0 views

  •
"Older, wiser and a lot of them The world is on the cusp of a staggering rise in the number of old people, and they will live longer than ever before. Over the next 20 years the global population of those aged 65 or more will almost double, from 600m to 1.1 billion. The experience of the 20th century, when greater longevity translated into more years in retirement rather than more years at work, has persuaded many observers that this shift will lead to slower economic growth and "secular stagnation", while the swelling ranks of pensioners will bust government budgets. But the notion of a sharp division between the working young and the idle old misses a new trend, the growing gap between the skilled and the unskilled. Employment rates are falling among younger unskilled people, whereas older skilled folk are working longer. The divide is most extreme in America, where well-educated baby-boomers are putting off retirement while many less-skilled younger people have dropped out of the workforce."

Engaging in Your Future: Creating Life after Your Career - 1 views

Jeanne McPherson is hosting a retreat for women considering life after career--sounds like Encore to me. She doesn't give away too much in her description but the format, etc. seems interesting to me.
  •
Yes- it sounds a lot like several of our workshops combined. I know that Bobbi has tried doing a weekend format and did not have much success with that. I think it would be ideal - to really devote that kind of time to this important discovery process.

Compelling story about baby boomers who are trying to help themselves within Neighbors-helping-Neighbors U.S.A., a volunteer networking organization with 28 chapters in New Jersey serving 1,200 unemployed, mainly white-collar, baby boomers. These baby boomers are not able to find new employment that comes close to their previous work. "What he does recommend is lowering expectations. "You're not likely to be the department head," he said, "so sell yourself as a team player who will work with younger people and help train them." "

Doris this is a great story and it definitely validates that what we are doing can be a resource for those in need of a job. I do want to include a solild program on job searching and networking/ resume/interviewing etc. I also believe this is a bigger issue for our society- so glad to read about what congress is working on. Thank you for sharing this.

post by George H. Schofield, July 10, 2013 on five abilities that baby boomers need to develop after age 50 in order to flourish 1. Identity ability-keep redefining yourself with new titles; instead of jobless, become a student, community leader, entrepreneur, etc. 2. Selecting ability--sort through your circumstances to navigate uncharted territory 3. Meaning-finding ability--take disruptions and reframing them to find meaning, value, and way to move on 4. Community ability--using interruptions as launching pads for volunteering and other meaningful work 5. Financial reality-check ability--earning money and structure, friends, fun

Post by Dianne Harman, Huff Post, June 6, 2013 on reinvention. Like this conclusion: Every time you reinvent yourself, you're forced to learn something new. And a mind that's engaged in learning is a young mind. So what's your reinvention story?
