eLearning Authoring Tools Check List of Features Are you looking for a new tool for authoring eLearning? Such tools vary widely in their capabilities. Many are specialists - converting PowerPoint presentations, capturing screens, preparing quizzes and assessments, developing mobile modules, etc. Some are desktop programs for individual use and others are web-based for collaborative authoring. A few are fairly comprehensive. This is a check list of possible features that you might look for when making a decision about an eLearning authoring program. Very few offer all of these. Those that are essential, nice to have, or not important will be a function of your particular needs. Let's start with a simple definition: eLearning Authoring tools are used to create eLearning lessons. These tools have been around much longer than most people know. When asked, many guess that they started coming on the market recently or perhaps back in the 1990s. The truth is the National Science Foundation funded the first authoring tool, called PLATO, way back in 1960, and then another in 1967, called TICCIT. Both spawned many other authoring tools over the years.

For many organizations, the authoring tools, are one of the most significant software for developing eLearning courses. Recently I read a post from trainingindustry.com "2012 Top Authoring Tools Companies" and I made my research concerning The Top Authoring Tools Companies based on Social Media. I ranked the Top Authoring Tools Companies of trainingindustry.com based on the people that follows them on their social networks.

In this post I will present you a list of Free Authoring Tools that you can use in your eLearning design and development process. 4 Typical eLearning Projects and The Right eLearning Authoring Tool Some of the most rewarding moments in my career are times when a colleague or client asks with wonderment, "How did you do that?" after viewing an eLearning module or Just In Time training tool or resource I have created. My initial reply to this question is nearly always to list the learning technologies I used. Camtasia, Articulate, Captivate, Composica or Raptivity? Which eLearning Authoring Tool is the best based on your clients? Could we see demos?

One of the greatest struggles I see with Instructional Designers is trying decide which rapid authoring tool to purchase and spend their limited time learning. Generally, it's a choice between Articulate, Captivate and Camtasia Studio with Camtasia running a distant third (unless software demos make up the bulk of the training). In the past I would have agreed that Camtasia would not have been my first choice for true e-learning but with the two most recent releases of this software I've found it to be the perfect tool for not just software demos but also soft skills and compliance training.
