I've seen a couple of recommendations for tools and software on here seperately. I'm a freelance Instructional Designer, in my first year as an independent. I'm finding tools here and there, as I'm trying to minimize operating costs where possible. Individually it seems that many ID's and consultants have their favorite go-to tools that they know. I think it would be really great for us to pull together a list of free ID tools into one area. For example, someone in this group recommend Jing as an alternative to Snagit. Simulations for Fun and Profit by David A. Mallette, Instructional Systems Technologist NOTE: The video and simulation both require Flash and adequate bandwidth. As mentioned here, we have discontinued web distribution of our training in favor of local launch, server authenticated systems of our own design due to bandwidth and latency issues on the Internet that are not likely to be resolved for a long time. The video is compressed enough for 500kpbs or so throughput and the simulation will run in less. By the mid 90s, simulation was the place to be for those on the cutting edge of technical training. A variety of raster-based, multi-tasking computer platforms were available that could provide real-time, free-play simulations of complex machines. Whoops. I've probably lost a bunch of you right there at "raster." I'll explain.

Instructional Design Strategy for Achieving Alignment Which Comes First, Activities or Assessments? We have been told all our lives to put things in order. Keep your tax files in order. Keep your house in order. Alphabetize your index. Number your chapters. Write the introduction before the conclusion. Yet, sometimes actually doing things in the order in which they appear as a final product is not the most effective approach. Take course design for example. When we see the finished product of an online course, we see the objectives followed by activities and resources, and finally the assessment. A cover letter gives you a chance to make a case for yourself, and cover everything you cannot express in your resume. It affords you an opportunity to come across as real people and explain your suitability for the desired position, to potential employers. Companies often look for thoughtfully written cover letters, as a method of screening applicants who lack the necessary skills or interest for the said position. Cover letter can thus form into a marketing vehicle for any prospective job seeker.

One of the greatest struggles I see with Instructional Designers is trying decide which rapid authoring tool to purchase and spend their limited time learning. Generally, it's a choice between Articulate, Captivate and Camtasia Studio with Camtasia running a distant third (unless software demos make up the bulk of the training). In the past I would have agreed that Camtasia would not have been my first choice for true e-learning but with the two most recent releases of this software I've found it to be the perfect tool for not just software demos but also soft skills and compliance training.
