Artists in the Classroom - 11 views

Love this dialogue- quote I feel like part of my job as an artist and educator (and specifically the combination of the two) is: - To be a prodder and poker of conventional thought. - To be a student advocate. - To think about what schools are for, really, in the long run; Is their purpose to prepare students for the way the world is now? To prepare students for the way the world will be? To prepare students for the way the world should be? To prepare students to change the world? To teach students how to follow rules? To teach students how to meaningfully break the rules? To teach students how to re-write the rules? To teach students about what interests them as individuals? To teach students about what we (the teachers) think should interest them? To teach students how to take tests? To teach students how to teach themselves. etc……To do all of these things at the same time?

Schools Matter: Resolution submitted to NCTE opposing common core standards and nationa... - 4 views
-
A resolution being submitted to the National Council of Teachers of English blaming current US problems on poverty not the education system. (On a note from me: The country is crying out for change in education. Change can be done to you or by you. To defiantly state there are no problems is to deny the truth. Every system has issues. No school is perfect. But right now, the national opinion is that there are problems. I'd be offering solutions you can live with or live with the solutions handed down to you by a clueless bureaucrat who only was in a classroom when he/she was a child. The one thing that is an advantage is that when industries standardize, we often see innovation. How much time is wasted in aligning with 50 different state standards?))
The Progressive Stack and Standing for Inclusive Teaching - The Tattooed Professor - 2 views

There are two fundamental truths about Inclusive Pedagogy: it is an eminently desirable set of practices for teaching in higher ed, and it is an eminently difficult set of practices for teaching in higher ed
-
Put simply, the Progressive Stack is a method of ensuring that voices that are often submerged, discounted, or excluded from traditional classroom discussions get a chance to be heard
-
There are personal, cultural, learning, and social reasons people don’t speak up in class. Students of color and women of all races, introverts, the non-conventional thinkers, those from poor previous educational backgrounds, returning or “nontraditional students,” and those from cultures where speaking out is considered rude not participatory are all likely to be silent in a class where collaboration by difference is not structured as a principle of pedagogy and organization and design. Who loses? Everyone. Arguments that are smart and valuable and can change a whole conversation get lost in silence and, sometimes, shame. When that happens, we don’t really have discussion or collaboration. We have group think–and that is why we all lose.

What Cliff? Data and the Destruction of Public Higher Ed | Just Visiting - 2 views
-
That higher education institutions are facing a “demographic cliff” in the coming years has become conventional wisdom. But what if there is no cliff? What if we’ve instead been subjected to a narrative rooted in limited data that serves the interests of corporations and is doing real damage to our public institutions?

Currently, the NCES projects relatively constant numbers of high school graduates through 2030, with total graduates expected to increase in the mid-2020s, followed by a modest decline, making the projected 2029–30 number slightly greater than in 2016–17. Further, it is important to note that since the 1970s, the total number of high school graduates in the U.S. has declined several times before. More importantly for higher education, the NCES projects modest increases in higher education enrollments through 2029.
