Lively - Livewire Society - 0 views

  •
Students in the phillipines have made a wiki in support of Lively. They are sharing their avatars and the rooms that they have made along with screenshots of their rooms and avatars. This is a wonderful thing to see that other kids are using this website. Kids love virtual worlds and there are great applications. Google is making a mistake. I WISH WISH they would listen to these students who see great potential.

Future of Education - Charting the Course of Education and Learning in a Networked World - 0 views

  •
From Steve Hargadon: "I've started a new community at http://www.FutureofEducation.com to providing an opportunity for those who care about education to share their voices and ideas on charting the course of education in a networked world. It's a place for thoughtful discussion on an incredibly important topic. The site will launch officially at the end of the month with the start of a weekly interview series, but I'm inviting some participation now because of an email Carol Broos (http://www.classroom20.com/profile/beatechie) sent out. Carol is one of twelve teachers who have been invited to participate in a round table discussion concerning the direction of education the new Secretary of Education Arne Duncan on Jan 21. She was sent the following questions, and is asking for feedback and ideas. You can respond either at the new http://www.FutureofEducation.com site or her wiki at http://education20.pbwiki.com/FrontPage. Here are the questions: 1. What is the one most important education issue you wish Secretary Duncan to focus on during his tenure and why? 2. How shall the tenets of the No Child Left Behind act be altered or invigorated? What are its positives? How can its negatives be improved? 3. How should the new administration respond to the nation's need for better prepared and more qualified teachers? 4.What should the new administration do to increase student engagement in mathematics, the sciences and the arts? 5. How should funding equity issues be addressed? There is also a discussion topic on what questions were not asked that might have been." This seems to be a great thing!

Federation of American Scientists :: The National Center for Research in Advanced Infor... - 0 views

  •
New center for researching information and digital technologies and the impact on learning has been created.
  •
Comprehensive research on how advanced computer and communication technologies can improve all levels of learning has been funded. This National Center was created and signed into law on August 14, 2008 in the United States. I think that research is a great thing. I they will involve all educators in developing their primary questions. Research based best practices underlie all we do and we do need more. I hope, however, they don't get too hung up on the technology (i.e. wiki, blog) and focus on what technology lets us do.

Past Issues - UI Design Newsletter - 0 views

  • You can ask them what they noticed, but self reporting of this sort is notoriously inaccurate – if you ask people to point to what they look at, and meld that with an eyetracking overlay of where their eyes actually went there is a startling gap.
  • applied eyetracking methodologies to measure the attention-drawing effects of new and newly modified elements of search results pages.
  • there is a strong correlation where people look and where they click on search results pages
  • ...5 more annotations...
  • They look a bit like hurricane maps. People get most excited about findings where the gaze patterns are highly organized... and look a bit like a well-formed hurricane.
  • The visual design works!"
  • So, the visual design objective of a website is to draw your attention to move around the page.
  • longest looking times may not. In fact, longest looking times can, in some cases, reflect multiple lookbacks and dwell time indicating confusion or uncertainty about a next step, a label or an interaction.
  • If there is no fixation we cannot possibly process the content. If there is no fixation we can't be influenced. Amazing, but the part we should pay attention to in our eyetracking results is probably the area that is NOT highlighted!!

Article about how people look at web pages.

As you design web pages for use with your students -- do you wonder why they don't sometimes SEE what you're putting in front of them -- it is because of eye movement. It is design!!! This paper writes about the effect of website design on eye movement. Those who are desigining online curriculum need to understand this. My sister, Sarah, has been an onlien professor for Savannah College of Art and Design for a while, ,and this is something she talks about in her courses and shares with me. This is why I emphasize wiki layout and design w/ my students (like having a table of contents and white space.) If it is not attractive, it just doesn't exist, because it IS NOT READ! Educators will do well to remember that!

twitter4teachers / FrontPage - 0 views

I'm a bit of a twitter snob- I tend mostly to follow back educators. I get the idea of diversification of information, but now that I'm following over 400 people I find that I prefer the education conversations and use Twitter for that purpose. My RSS is diversified, my Twitter is about education and learning.
  •
This wiki was created to easily help educators find other educators on Twitter that have the same interests as them (that teach in the same content area). Check out the list of educators on the pages linked below and add your Twitter name to the appropriate list too.
