Info Island, Community Virtual Library - 1 views

  •
The volunteer librarians of Info Island provide actual reference service for people's questions both inside and beyond Second Life. "Ask the Librarian" is a virtual reference service where you can chat with a librarian to get assistance. The multi-lingual service is international in scope. There is a very useful library of free Second Life scripts and educational tools. This is a great resource for educators.

Virtual Community Landmarks - 1 views

  •
This is an incredible location- a collection of intriguing landmarks from a variety of subjects. You really need to stop by here and pick up some good ideas about places to visit in SL and the internet. From one location you can view displays on many topics complete with links to webpages and notecards containing additional references. Some ideas: DaVinci's Observatory, A Cooking Center, Hyperhistory -http://www.hyperhistory.com/online_n2/History_n2/a.html Spectrum School Network- http://www.incwell.com/Biographies/ History of Computing and Learning in Education Open Library: directory-style search http://openlibrary.org/search/subjects?q=educational+technology

Teacher Professional Development and Teacher Resources by Annenberg Media - 0 views

  •
Annenberg Media provides wonderful resources for teachers of almost any discipline from kindergarten though college. I use the American Passages series in my American Literature classes. Students can watch brief videos, which really bring content to life, but what is great is that Annenberg includes so much more than just videos -- discussion questions, other links to more information, glossaries of key terms, project and essay ideas. The drawback is the passive nature of the site. Students watch videos; they don't create them or edit them. The activities surrounding the videos incoporate reading, writing, and possibly discussing, but these approaches in isolation, as we have seen, do not always provide the most immersive or effective learning experience.

Portus Project - University of Southampton - 1 views

  •
The University of Southampton has an extensive presence in SL. One of the projects that they are developing is an exercise in visualization of an ancient Roman port. In addition to SL, they are also developing texture maps for Google Earth. The Portus Project in SL is referred to as Portus 2 and is a developing interactive representation of the entire port city. Posters, video, and other multimedia displays show the evolution of the project.

This article interested me because I noticed and found similar learning barriers when using second life. I also found it interesting because these were college aged students who had barriers like ...

Neil A. Armstrong Library Archives at NASA CoLab - 0 views

This SLURL includes a library of archives about aeronautics. It is overwhelmed with information. The ones I would choose to use for my students (primary children K-6) would be the Women in flight, the reference desk, pictures/gallery of astronauts (which includes pictures of astronauts landing on the moon), and gallery of African American pilots.

Vassar Univ.'s Sistine Chapel Re-Creation - 2 views

This SLURL drops you right in front of the Sistene Chapel. When you enter there is a reference card to your right that explains how to view the art. It is amazing. You can fly up to the ceiling and actually touch the artwork by Michaelangelo. I would love to take my 7th grade students here or a similar site when we study the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The tapestries by Rapael come to life when you touch them.

I will definitely check this one out. I wow my students with Google Earth's street view and 3D buildings to show them the world. My student population see very little outside of their community, so it comes in handy. I am always looking for news ways to have them "see" the world. Thanks for the links. Now I will continue to pester my IS dept. to loosen up a little and let us have access.

Cynthia, we found the Sistine chapel too ... my group just loved this stunning location. I did not try touching the tapestries! I think we'll go back and check that out. Thanks for mentioning this feature we did not explore!
