    英国是世界上最早把信息技术课列为国家课程的国家之一，也是较早提出并实践信息技术与其它学科整合的国家。英国在1988年通过的《教育改革法案》中制订了全国统一的国家课程(the National Curriculum)，目的在于规定英国中小学各门课程的基本教学内容及其应达到的学习目标，促进中小学教育质量的全面提高。其中IT(Information Technology，信息技术课程)被列入了全国统一课程中。随着IT在教育界内涵的不断丰富，它已不仅是学习的一项内容和传统教育的辅助工具，更被视为推动整个教育理念与模式发展的重要因素。因此在2000年9月修订的国家课程中，英国把IT课程进一步改名为ICT(Information and Communication Technology，信息与通信技术)，其宗旨在于强调包括因特网在内的现代信息技术在发展学生的个人能力、通讯交流能力和参与社会的竞争力方面的综合作用。
