National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Illuminations - 0 views

  •
Using Illuminations, which is sponsored by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, exposes the students to simulations that will assist in the understanding of this difficult concepts.
  •
I recall the drill and skill activities of the first computers in my classroom. They were similar to the flashcards previously used with the added advantage of bouncy smiley faces entertaining the students' correct response. The sites shared above go far beyond such response strengthening multimedia. The Chinese proverb goes, "Give me a fish and I eat for a day. Teach me to fish and I eat for a lifetime." a proverb for multimedia learning might say tell me information I learn for a day, show me information I learn for a week, teach me to find and use information I learn for a lifetime. This course will model this metaphor for the teachers who will in turn model it for their students as they construct their own knowledge.

This site allows you to generate interactive mindmaps that help organize thoughts and ideas into great visual representations. It is easy to create, to meanipulate, and to edit. You are able to collaborate on the map with others and you canmake the map public or share with select audiences.

I recently discovered Spinscape, which is a mindmapping webtool that can be used to create a graphic organizer. It has so many features wrapped into one application. Some of the features that I would find helpful in using Spinscape are the ability to insert links, widgets to post Youtube video, notes, attachments and even tasks for managing a project. Spinscape also offers numerous different views such as the classic bubbles, compact, wiki and farmland styles. The ability to put in tags also makes this a useful tool to help locate information. This definitely is a more visually appealing and more multi-functional than some of the other mindmaps that I have seen, but it is significantly more difficult to navigate and use. It exports the files in multiple formats (HTML, PDF, Word), but not in JPEG. I would really love to use this tool for my presentation, but I will probably not because of the cost. I have been using my 7 day trial membership to explore and it will be expired by the time that I do my workshop.
  •
Previously submitted this website for consideration. The sign-in features include using your Yahoo, Google, and Facebook accounts (most middle schools students have at least 2 of these accounts) as well as the ability to embed widgets(youtube) into the mind map.
  •
Spinscape is a graphic organizer that allows for images, hyperlinks, and collaboration. as a tool used for organizing material, it can help students focus on the important elements of the course. I believe the most important element of this tool is the potential for the effective use of collaboration among students using images and hyperlinks.
  •
This is a collaborative mind mapping resource. It is used to work together to find and share information on any subject. It can be used in real time with users around the world to create collaborative mind maps on any topic. This site provides tutorials for users to learn about the various features that can be utilized within the program. I think this site is the best resource for mind-mapping because of the real time collaborative element and the ability to find a variety of pre-created mind maps.
  •
Spinscape is not only a great tool as a graphic organizer to find, organize, and share information, but it also allows for real time collaboration with peers from around the world. I like this website over other similar sites because you can add text, images, or graphics to expand on the information provided within the graphic organizer.

Presentation Website 2 - 2 views

Showbeyond http://www.showbeyond.com Showbeyond is a resource that I came across while I was teaching my journalism students how to create a photo essay. Even though I just randomly stumbled across this resource it has proven to be a wonderfully simple to use slide cast program. Slide casts are an online multimedia format that combines and synchronizes slideshows with podcasts. I have found this format perfect for online story telling as well as online presentations. I think Showbeyond is a resource more fit for middle and high school students and educators. Showbeyond allows students and educators to design and create multimedia presentations easily and quickly. Showbeyond is a resource that lets you select and manipulate photos and text to create a visual presentation which you can add podcasts, music, and videos to. I chose Showbeyond because I don't think you can find a more accessible multimedia to create simple presentations on. I say simple because Showbeyond is not capable of some the more advanced features such as animation and timed slides like PowerPoint and MovieMaker are capable of. However, I do use Showbeyond in my classroom often and my students really enjoy the products that they can create.

Poll everywhere allows for polls, simple quizzes, text based responses from an audience. It is a tool for gathering data and opinions from an audience. It is free unless you want to use more expansive tools.
  •
Diagnostic assessments drive the instruction process, when teachers/presenters know what the students know, need to know or wonder about. Poll Everywhere is an audience response system using standard web technology. It works through text, web, or Twitter, its simplicity and flexibility are earning rave reviews. I love it because responses show up immediately on the screen, allowing the instructor to create a chart, or just show responses. This is a free web-based program for up to 30 responders.
  •
This website allows a user to develop online polls that learners in a workshop/presentation can participate in. With regard to pre-training activities, quick polls can help both learners and the instructor quickly gauge what the learners know before digging into the planned activities. In addition, polls can be designed to engage learners and prepare them for some of the activities they will participate in. The product available at this website provides free access for designing quick polls. It also allows the designer to choose how participants respond to the polls. In addition to text messaging, the designer can use a web address (if mobile devices are not convenient for the setting) to allow easy access. In addition to the interactive capabilities, the polls can be seamlessly integrated into a PowerPoint presentation or website.

Google Docs: Presentation - 0 views

Google docs is a great way to merge existing documents, with the ability to create and organize documents online. It is better than a lot of other options because it is free, and transfers across computer platforms.

We are all familiar with Google Docs. It can be used to place documents, spreadsheets, presentations, drawings, and forms to share during presentations. I like this because it is so easy and free! Documents can also be edited by students.

Google docs is a web based productivity platform that allows the creation of documents, spreadsheets, diagrams and forms. Multiple users can access files simultaneously, allow for collaboration.
  •
Google has a ton of free resources that have the same functionality as Powerpoint or Keynote. One of the great components of Google Docs is the ability to collaborate with others through real time chat or make comments/revisions to a document. For a presentation, Google Docs has a presentation tool that is easy to use, free, and accessible from any location with an internet connection. although the presentations are not flashy, they help teachers incorporate multimedia into their instruction and make the technology accessible for all of their students.

Mind42 - 1 views

  •
Mind42 is a browser based online mind mapping application. With Mind42 mindmapping tools are no longer needed, you can manage ideas alone, or work collaboratively
  •
The mind42 site offers a free online tool for creating graphic organizers / mind maps similar to those created by webspiration. However, mind42 provides excellent file export functionality saving as .jpg, .png, .pdf, and other file formats. also of interest are collapsible / expandable branches that could facilitate a gradual introduction of topics in a live lesson, as well as the ability to include notes, Web links, and a variety of icons in each node as needed. Of note, however, is the ability to include images directly into the graphic organizer by searching for relevant images online or by providing a direct link to an online image. Some basic formatting options, such as text color and size, are present. However, as all nodes other than the parent or central node are lines, no formatting of shapes is available. The tool does offer a simple approach to creating mind maps and graphic organizers, which may warrant additional investigation and use. In short, the saving functionality, branching without termination nodes (use a line instead), collapsibility, and image inclusion are features that may prove more useful than comparable tools. Considering essential cognitive processing, the tool may assist with selecting and organizing complex material in order to reach a generative processing state. This may be possible by presenting information in a keyed and organized approach, which is a central premise of most mind mapping software.
  •
Mind42 is an online mind map that allows users to add images to their brainstorming and collaborate with others. Users have access to a gallery of mind maps and can post comments. This site can be used for essesntial learning based on its multimedia capabilities. Mind42 is a better website than other mind maps that I have reviewd because of the extra support provided through the gallery of mind maps.

Brief description ...: This program allows the teacher to create a visual word cloud from a list of words or passages which helps to familiarize the learner with information that will be covered during the lesson or training session. as a generative process, the learners working memory is stimulated as it opens the senses for what is to come, during the presentation. Jing is a free screen casting software available from Tech Smith. Jing allows users to make up to five-minute screen casts that can be used for tutorials and presentations. Jing is useful in both essential and generative learning process.
  •
Jing allows for the recording of screenshots to create images, as well as filming screen casts of actions performed on the user's screen. It also has an added multimedia feature to add audio to screenshots and screen casts. I chose this website because it will allow me to create a screen cast video for my workshop participants to show them how to use different features in creating a glog using Glogster EDU.
  •
Jing is a screen capture program that can combine pictures and recorded audio. This is program is like a scaled down Camtasia, and is not as powerful, but also does not involve the cost of Camtasia. The screen capture and voice capture functions do work as advertised. Jing can capture anything displayed on your computer screen, pictures, video being played, movements of the mouse etc, the final product can be saved for further use, shared online, or emailed to others.
  •
Jing is an online computer service that provides its users with the capability to capture basic video, animation, and still images, while also being able to share what has been captured on the web with others. Jing can capture anything displayed on the computer screen, including pictures, video, and even movements of the mouse. The final product can be saved for further use, shared online, or emailed to others. Jing is considered a technology-centered program that has the capability to produce learning. The technology-centered approach fails to lean to lasting improvements in education, therefore, the use of jing alone would not warrant effective learning.

o Jing is a screencast program where users can create a video of their screens while narrating instructions. In addition, users can develop screenshots with notations to create manuals and instructions. Students can demonstrate procedural knowledge through the use of this program and make sense of processes. In addition, teachers can share vast guidance on how online programs and feature work through the creation of screencasts. o The site is free which is pretty incredible considering you can also host your videos and share them via a url which makes emailing large files much easier. The site is easy to use and the quality of the screencasts remarkable.
