Clive Thompson on 3-D Printing's Legal Morass | Wired Design | Wired.com - 2 views

  •
"Last winter, Thomas Valenty bought a MakerBot - an inexpensive 3-D printer that lets you quickly create plastic objects. His brother had some Imperial Guards from the tabletop game Warhammer, so Valenty decided to design a couple of his own Warhammer-style figurines: a two-legged war mecha and a tank. He tweaked the designs for a week until he was happy. "I put a lot of work into them," he says. Then he posted the files for free downloading on Thingiverse, a site that lets you share instructions for printing 3-D objects. Soon other fans were outputting their own copies. Until the lawyers showed up."

The New MakerBot Replicator Might Just Change Your World | Wired Design | Wired.com - 2 views

  •
"By all evidence, 3-D printing has reached its inflection point, when it moves from the sophisticated early adopters to people who just want to print something cool. Soon, probably in the next few years, the market will be ready for a mainstream 3-D printer sold by the millions at Walmart and Costco. At that point, the incredible economies of scale that an HP or Epson can bring to bear will kick in. A 3-D printer will cost $99, and everyone will be able to buy one."

The Structure Sensor is the first 3D sensor for mobile devices - 1 views

  •
The Structure Sensor is a 3-D sensing camera which clips onto the back of your iPad and hooks into its Lightning port. The camera has its own battery, and grabs a VGA image at up to 60fps. That doesn't sound like much, but it's plenty enough to allow you to make a 3-D map of your room just by swinging your iPad around, or to play 3-D augmented reality games that actually interact with real objects in your environment.

Copy Protection for 3-D Printing Aims to Prevent a Piracy Plague | MIT Technology Review - 0 views

  •
"People in the 3-D printing world have talked for years about the possibility of unauthorized copying and sharing of designs-similar to what the file-sharing program Napster allowed for music. Now the first commercial solution to this as-yet theoretical problem is preparing to launch. It was developed by Authentise, a startup based in Mountain View, California."

David Truss :: Pair-a-dimes for Your Thoughts » The Pro-D Flip - 2 views

  •
Professional Development for me used to be about going to sessions on specific days and then trying to 'bring back' what I've learned and incorporate it into my daily practice. Sometimes this was very challenging, I would get inundated with new information and find it very hard to apply what I learned into what I did on a day-to-day basis. Often my notes would be filed away, not to be seen again.

Facebook self-censorship: What happens to the posts you don't publish? - 2 views

  •
"Unfortunately, the code in your browser that powers Facebook still knows what you typed-even if you decide not to publish it.* It turns out that the things you explicitly choose not to share aren't entirely private. Facebook calls these unposted thoughts "self-censorship," and insights into how it collects these nonposts can be found in a recent paper written by two Facebookers. Sauvik Das, a Ph.D. student at Carnegie Mellon and summer software engineer intern at Facebook, and Adam Kramer, a Facebook data scientist, have put online an article presenting their study of the self-censorship behavior collected from 5 million English-speaking Facebook users. Msg to mum: don't sweat the cyber stuff - 5 views

  •
"Cyber-bullying, update-addiction, sexting - from the perspective of a parent raising a ''digital native'' child, social media seems fraught with dangers. But new research suggests the risks inherent in social media use by younger generations might be overblown. danah boyd, assistant research professor at Harvard and principal researcher for Microsoft Research - like k.d.lang, she prefers the lower case - has completed a large-scale study on how US teenagers use the internet in general, and social media in particular. Her book is called It's Complicated, and is the result of in-depth interviews with scores of teens over an eight-year period."

ChartTool - create nice looking charts with Image Charts! - 5 views

  •
This neat tool from Google, ChartTool is a simple-to-use chart-making service that lets you simply paste in your data and play around with how it looks. It's never been easier to whip up charts that are actually easy to use and update. In fact, embedding these charts on web pages is quite simple thanks to the embed API. You can even make QR codes in just a few seconds and quickly get an embed code to add it to your website. While ChartTool does not create as many of those fancy 3-D charts that Excel does (it still makes quite a few), it likely will be able to in the future. However, if you're in a rush and need to whip up some exact charts without all the fluff, this is the tool for you.
