Teachers speak out - the full results of the Guardian Teacher Network survey | Teacher ... - 3 views

he job of teaching * Join in the discussion reddit this Comments (1) Wendy Berliner Guardian Professional, Monday 3 October 2011 18.30 BST Article history Teacher Daniel Hartley from Chulmleigh Community College, Devon. Photograph: Apex Back in the summer we decided here at GTN HQ that, with our membership rocketing, it was the right time to mark our first six months in operation with a survey to find out what members thought about teaching today. There were questions across a wide spectrum of topics and, at the end, we left a free text box for teachers to add any comments they wanted to share. It was the dying days of the summer holiday - August 25 - when it went out just after lunch. We knew the survey would take ten or 15 minutes to complete so we weren't quite expecting what happened next, but within those first few hours after its release, we realised you had started something big. By 10.30pm that night we'd had several hundred questionnaires back, which in itself was impressive with many teachers perhaps still away on holiday or back but busy preparing for the new term. The most impressive thing of all was the content of those text boxes. There was just so much of it. Some people wrote several hundred words at a time, speaking clearly from the heart and arguing cogently against the things they felt were going wrong in education. A love of teaching and vocational pleasure felt working with children and young people emerged but it was emerging from a fog caused by far less pleasant aspects of the job - disrespect from society and governments, bullying by senior management, other teachers, parents and students, despair at the parenting skills of some homes and despair with government targets and league tables that were funnelling education into an ever thinner tube feeding stuff that improved Sats and exam results rather than nourishing a lifelong love of learning. One former solicitor questioning the sense of the switch into teaching said: " M

Surgery blinded by Google Glass advances - 2 views

  •
"After watching surgeons perform these experiments, it is chilling to watch the Google Glass promotional video showing a cyclist riding between cars in heavy New York City traffic, while being bombarded with head-up navigational data. Our attention is a resource that is extremely limited in supply and instinctively overestimated. Inevitably - as with mobile phone use while driving - accidents will occur and we will be left to legislate use after a string of tragedies. The biggest challenge with Google Glass and similar devices is us. When we divert our gaze to our smart phones, we do so consciously and alter our thoughts and actions, hopefully in a safe way, to compensate. If information is to be projected directly in front of your eyes, it needs to be filtered to avoid accidents."

What did the guy telling you to use Google Apps miss? | The Playable Classroom - 4 views

"The Internet might not be the place to send young people quite as easily as a few years ago. I realise this conflicts with the whole 'get a personal learning network/connected teacher' rhetoric - but I'm pretty sure those things are more concerned with creating advertising funnels for particular products and services than actually re-imagining how learning could work for millions of people. So apart from the fact you want to stay open-minded and allowed to think for yourself as a teacher - why else it is now more valid than ever to to think twice about 'getting onboarded'. The late adopter might just be the smart ones after all."

"At a recently held press event, Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg took to the stage to announce Facebook Home. After a quick joke regarding the Facebook phone rumours, he went on to reveal that Facebook Home is a new app that will be made available to a certain set of Android phones (at least, initially) that extensively changes the Android experience by making it more heavily integrated with Facebook."

How Plus Will Become The Next Google Reader - Technorati Social Media - 2 views

  •
"After all of the hand-wringing over the announced shuttering of Google Reader on July 1st, is there still hope for the beleaguered content aggregator? If you look between the lines of Google's movements as of late, you might notice that we aren't really witnessing a slow, painful, public funeral. Perhaps what we're being asked to attend is a digital reincarnation. Like other social networks, Google's still new-shiny social network Plus is an RSS feed creator and reader, all in one. "

BBC News - Online appeal unearths historic web page - 2 views

  •
"A search to recover the very first web page has unearthed a relic from 1991. The page turned up after Cern launched a public appeal for files, hardware and software from the web's earliest days. The original page is missing because the web's creators did not preserve the early work they did on what has become a historic document."

Introducing Project Loon: Balloon-powered Internet access - 0 views

  •
"We believe that it might actually be possible to build a ring of balloons, flying around the globe on the stratospheric winds, that provides Internet access to the earth below. It's very early days, but we've built a system that uses balloons, carried by the wind at altitudes twice as high as commercial planes, to beam Internet access to the ground at speeds similar to today's 3G networks or faster. As a result, we hope balloons could become an option for connecting rural, remote, and underserved areas, and for helping with communications after natural disasters. The idea may sound a bit crazy-and that's part of the reason we're calling it Project Loon-but there's solid science behind it. "

The Rise of Google Plus | Business 2 Community - 6 views

"When Google Plus was announced in 2011, many people were skeptical that the social network would be able to gain ground against the likes of LinkedIn and Twitter, let alone the industry-leading giant Facebook. After all, looking at the Palo Alto-based Google previous cracks at a similar experiment, it would appear that social media was one area that Google struggled with."
