A group of eight companies - including the Campbell Soup Company, Henkel, PepsiCo, and Unilever -have adopted the How2Recycle labeling system, a standardized labeling system for product packaging that communicates recycling instructions to U.S. consumers. The How2Recycle label is now featured on thousands of products from more than 60 companies.

Machine washing of clothes is a major contributor to plastic pollution in the oceans. Every time we do laundry, garments made from synthetic fabrics such as fleece and polyester shed small plastic fibers that end up in the water and pollute rivers and oceans. So denim giant G-Star and marine pollution campaign group the Plastic Soup Foundation are joining forces to stop this process in its tracks with a battle against microfiber.

Last year, Campbell Soup was ranked by media and investment research company Corporate Knights as one of the world's most sustainable companies, with key initiatives that reduced water consumption by 13 billion liters, cut 280,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions and constructed a 24-hectare, 10 mega-watt solar field.

Plastic Soup Foundation (PSF), a Dutch nonprofit, and New York-based Parley for the Oceans announced Tuesday a partnership to tackle the issue of microfiber pollution and to create a global alliance of companies, governments, NGOs and scientists. Microfibers - tiny, often synthetic threads shed from laundry, industrial clothing manufacturing and fishing nets - have been found in alarming numbers in recent studies of microplastic pollution.

Companies including Campbell Soup, Colgate-Palmolive and Owens Corning use internal pricing mechanisms to keep tabs on, and hopefully reduce, their carbon emissions. That's a sign that business leaders are preparing for regulatory measures aimed at curbing carbon emissions, says Lance Pierce, president of nonprofit CDP North America. "The world's biggest companies anticipate a future in which their carbon emissions carry a price," he said. 

Norway is pioneering the use of captured carbon emissions to grow an algal soup that can be used as food for farmed fish, helping to reduce overfishing of the wild krill upon which fish farms more typically rely.

The Food Waste Reduction Alliance has released an updated guide. The 2015 Best Practices and Emerging Solutions Guide offers practical steps and examples to help food manufacturers, retailers, and restaurants cut food waste. More than 30 member companies across the food industry contributed insights and case studies, including The Campbell Soup Company and Sodexo. 

Whether or not you believe that GMOs are safe for human consumption, the majority of American consumers support the labeling of GMO foods. Genetically engineered crops might be here to stay, but even so, it may be in the industry's best interest to label products that contain them. So said Campbell Soup President and CEO Denise Morrison in a big announcement: Campbell will disclose the presence of GMOs on product labels across its portfolio and strongly supports federal legislation to make GMO labeling mandatory.
