Staples earned the World Packaging Organization's Gold Award for implementing packaging that reduced the company's carbon footprint by 25,000 metric tons per year and cut corrugated cardboard consumption 20%. Staples worked with Packsize International to develop and implement the new packaging.

Carnival, docked in the spotlight when it received the New Economy's Clean Tech Award for Best Marine Solutions Company. The award recognized Carnival's decision to install a new exhaust filtration system on its North American ships, at an estimated cost of $180m

Clean-technology accelerator the Cleantech Open has awarded PowWow Energy (pictured) the Grand Prize Cleanie award worth $200,000 for the Top Cleantech Entrepreneur of the year. PowWow Energy has developed technology that enables farmers and ranchers to quickly detect water leaks that can destroy an entire crop or cause thousands of dollars of damage.

This year, the Environmental Leader Product & Project Awards have been opened for corporations to submit projects they have implemented that helped improve sustainability metrics (or for consultants to submit projects they have implemented for corporate partners). Here are a few ideas, examples of successful projects that have come across our desks in recent months. These are the types of projects that would be strong submissions to win a Top Project of the Year Award.

"Trend Report: The Future of Sustainable Fashion" (H&M Foundation and Accenture) identifies five megatrends driving sustainable innovation in the fashion industry based on an analysis of 3,000 applications submitted for the H&M Foundation's 2017 Global Change Award: the sharing economy, digitalization, biodesign, re-selling and re-design, and innovative recycling.

McDonald's today announced its "2014 Best of Sustainable Supply" winners in a report highlighting how suppliers achieved significant results by identifying opportunities and applying sustainable solutions in diverse places around the world.

The White House last week outlined plans to get the US offshore wind industry off the ground. The White House has awarded Maine, Rhode Island, New York and Massachusetts each a grant of $600,000 to support offshore wind development. It has also established an interagency group in support of offshore wind. A shopping center in Thousand Oaks, Calif., has been named the first BREEAM USA In-Use certified building in the country, a designation for sustainability efforts at pre-existing nonresidential structures. The Oaks Shopping Center features 6,000 solar panels, LED lighting, a mixed-materials recycling campaign and more to help minimize the building's environmental impact.

ntifying Disney's achievements and milestones throughout the year, Yahoo Finance named The Walt Disney Company as its Company of the Year just last month. The award is based on Yahoo's evaluation of quantitative and subjective standards that cover companies' financial performance, shareholder friendliness, strategic focus and customer loyalty.

A company that manufactures green-roof materials in Portland, Ore., has earned recognition for exporting. The award came from the federal Small Business Administration.

Disneyland Resort was recognized today by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency with the 2014 Food Recovery Challenge award for its zero waste efforts, and the highest percent increase in food recovery of any theme park in the nation. "Disneyland is a model for food recovery efforts," said Jared Blumenfeld, EPA's Regional Administrator for the Pacific Southwest. "Disney has the potential to educate millions of people who visit the resort on zero waste, while doing its part to fight climate change and create a better environment for Southern California residents."

Wyndham Vacation Ownership was named Lodging Brand of the Year at the LODGING Green and Sustainability Conference & Expo in Las Vegas, NV. The Wyndham Worldwide-owned company was recognized for innovative sustainability practices and for creating the WVO Green Certification program, which reportedly saves the company about $2.4 million every year in energy cost savings.
