Offshore wind is slowly taking off in the US, according to this analysis. Observers say that this trend can be seen in Massachusetts' proposed offshore wind bill, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management's plan to hold an offshore wind auction for a tract of space off the coast of New York and Maryland's continued work on the Maryland Offshore Wind Energy Act. Some say these advances and several others could help the nation's fledging offshore wind industry reach critical mass.

Spending on offshore wind energy development in Europe reached $14.45 billion last year. That was a record amount and double 2014's number. The rate is expected to decline this year but increase in the future. "Offshore wind power produces roughly one and a half times the energy of onshore wind power," said Toni Sulameri, who works for wind power production company Suomen Hyotytuuli Oy. Europe has 84 offshore wind farms.

A new report from the European Commission has concluded that wind power is the renewable energy technology with the largest and most successful deployment over the last 20 years.

Wind energy has been utilized more successfully than any other form of renewable energy for the past 20 years, according to the European Commission Joint Research Center. Over the past two decades, wind energy's global installed capacity has grown from 3 gigawatts to 370 GW, the report said. The U.S. added 131 megawatts of installed wind capacity in the first quarter of 2015 with 68 new turbines, the American Wind Energy Association said. 

The EU added a record-breaking 12.8 gigawatts of installed wind capacity last year, according to the European Wind Energy Association. The group says wind has surpassed hydro power, becoming the third-biggest source of generation in the EU. "Wind power accounts for one-third of all new power installations since 2000 in the EU. Conventional power sources such as fuel oil and coal continue to decommission more capacity than they install," EWEA said.

The U.S. could reduce electricity costs by $7.68 billion per year by installing 54 gigawatts of offshore wind power, according to a study supported by the Department of Energy. The goal of the National Offshore Wind Energy Grid Interconnection Study was "to identify and help address the market barriers to the large-scale introduction of offshore wind energy into the U.S. energy portfolio," according to its authors. The report said offshore wind power could be especially useful in densely populated coastal areas

In less than 15 years, at least 20% of the nation's electricity likely will be provided by wind, according to the American Wind Energy Association. The US had 18.2 gigawatts of installed wind capacity either under construction or in the pipeline during the second quarter of the year.

Amazon has signed a 13-year agreement to buy wind power from Pattern Energy's 150-megawatt wind farm in Benton County, Ind. The Fowler Ridge wind farm will be renamed the Amazon Web Services Wind Farm and is expected to begin operations as soon as January 2016.

General Electric will supply 55 wind turbines to the Chinese power generation company Huaneng Corporation for a planned 151 MW wind installation in China's Yunnan province. The deal is General Electric's largest wind power deal in China to date.

The White House last week outlined plans to get the US offshore wind industry off the ground. The White House has awarded Maine, Rhode Island, New York and Massachusetts each a grant of $600,000 to support offshore wind development. It has also established an interagency group in support of offshore wind. As part of that effort, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management plans to offer areas off the coasts of North Carolina and New Jersey. GovTech.com (10/2) 

Seventy percent of registered voters have a positive impression of wind development. "Candidates running for office on both sides of the aisle in this important election year should take note: The more wind farms we build, the stronger support from US voters grows," said American Wind Energy Association CEO Tom Kiernan.

The Obama administration's rule leans heavily on renewable energy to meet its goal to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 32 percent by 2030, which is an increase of 2 percentage points from the draft it released in the summer of 2014. While states have two additional years until they must begin cutting emissions - 2022 instead of 2020 - they are expected to start devising ways to improve their environments, which will focus on shifting to cleaner burning fuels and away from carbon-heavy ones. "The trend we are on will get us there," says Rob Gramlich, senior vice president for government affairs at the American Wind Energy Association, in a phone interview. "As the nation moves from coal to gas, and as it adds more wind, solar and energy efficiency, we will reach that 32 percent target."

The Obama administration's Clean Power Plan rule will require states to begin cutting carbon emissions by 2022. "The trend we are on will get us there. As the nation moves from coal to gas, and as it adds more wind, solar and energy efficiency, we will reach that 32% target," said Rob Gramlich of the American Wind Energy Association. GE and Siemens have become two of the top wind energy developers in the US, writes analyst Scott Levine. GE turbines accounted for about 60% of the installed wind capacity added in the US last year, and in the first half of 2015, GE secured orders for more than 1,264 turbines. Last year, Siemens added 1,241 MW of installed capacity, or more than a quarter of the US market. Siemens and GE will likely continue to be key players in the US as the cost of wind continues to decline, Levine writes

The Environmental Protection Agency published its final Clean Power Plan rule on Monday. Under the rule, the U.S. will be required to reduce its carbon emission 32% below 2005 levels by 2030. The solar and wind industries have praised the rule. "American wind power can do this. Low-cost wind energy reduced carbon emissions by 5% in 2014, and we're capable of doing a lot more," said American Wind Energy Association CEO Tom Kiernan. 

SC Johnson has begun sourcing 100% of the total electricity used at its Bay City, Mich., manufacturing plant from wind, making it the company's third site completely powered by wind, said the company. "With our third site powered entirely by wind energy, almost one-third of SC Johnson's energy usage globally now comes from renewable sources," said Kelly Semrau.

Cleantech company Mainstream Renewable Power will reportedly build and operate nearly 1 GW of wind power capacity in Chile by 2021. The 7 wind power projects have a combined investment value of more than $1.5 billion.

The Energy Information Agency emphasized the growing importance of offshore wind to the US energy landscape in its year-end summary, according to this piece. The summary also touted the significance of Deepwater Wind's Block Island wind farm off of Rhode Island -- the first of its kind in the US.

All trains in the Netherlands have been running completely on renewable wind energy since Jan. 1. Dutch transportation companies originally set a goal date of 2018 to implement 100% wind energy, but they completed the goal one year ahead of schedule.

The cost of wind energy in the US will continue to decline over the next three to five years as the industry prepares for the wind energy Production Tax Credit to lapse, according to Pattern Energy CEO and President Mike Garland. He said that Pattern has begun retrofitting its turbines to boost performance.

The U.S. will have to use a variety of renewable energy technologies, like offshore wind, to transition from a carbon-based energy economy to a renewable energy-based economy, according to Andrew Myers, an assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering at Northeastern University. In the U.S., "offshore wind energy is a vast, largely untapped resource of renewable energy with enormous potential," said Myers.
