Staples earned the World Packaging Organization's Gold Award for implementing packaging that reduced the company's carbon footprint by 25,000 metric tons per year and cut corrugated cardboard consumption 20%. Staples worked with Packsize International to develop and implement the new packaging.

Staples Canada has set a goal to divert 100,000 kilograms of batteries from landfills in 2014 and says it, with partner Call2Recycle, has collected and diverted 30,295 kg of batteries in the first quarter this year. The company also says, in the first two months of 2014 alone, it reduced emissions by 3,572 metric tons of CO².

Coca-Cola and Home Depot are also onboard with contracts meant to offset more than 100,000 metric tons of carbon in one year.

Starting this month, the big box giant aims to drive down the price of organic food nationwide with its new in-house line of 100 or so products in exclusive partnership with Wild Oats, a pioneering health brand of the 1980s. Walmart's new Wild Oats organic products - including kitchen cupboard staples like olive oil and black beans - will cost about 25 percent less than those sold by competitors, based on price comparisons of 26 national brands.
