Google uses RankBrain for every search, impacts rankings of "lots" of them - Search Eng... - 0 views

  • In short: Google’s clearly become so confident in RankBrain’s mysterious capabilities that it’s now used to help with every query that the search engine handles, more than two trillion per year.
  • Having said that, Google has said that RankBrain also is used as an actual ranking signal, repeating that yesterday at our SMX Advanced show. For the SEO and search marketers worried about what they should do now that RankBrain has ramped up, the answer remains the same: nothing, but focus on great content. Even people at Google don’t quite understand how RankBrain does what it does, we’ve been told. Honest. But it’s ultimately designed to reward great content. So focus on that, which has always been the case with SEO, and you’re on the right track.

SEO Professionals: How to Get Started with Wikidata - 0 views

  • On December 14, 2014, Google announced the shutdown of Freebase -- Wikidata's strongest competitor. As they did, Google also provided powerful support by migrating all of Freebase's data over to Wikidata
  • Along with structured data, Wikipedia, and a handful of others, Wikidata is a go-to source for building this information
  • Do not use multiple accounts to edit the same Wikidata listing.
  • ...10 more annotations...
  • Create a strong user page
  • Create at least one backup account
  • If you're new, it's a good rule of thumb to add almost no data that you can't back up with a reference or source link
  • description field in the listing. This should be as short and concise: five to ten words is an ideal target.
  • Unfortunately, the community works on predefined lists of properties and entries. This means that if there's no property existing and you want to add one, you'll need to go to the community to discuss its creation.
  • if there's a Wikidata article on something, you can probably assume it'll be usable as a property too; this knowledge can sometimes be used creatively to make a listing work for you.
  • If the company has an image on their Wikipedia page, be sure to include that on the Wikidata listing - logos are prime real estate in the knowledge graph. Format the entry using the property "logo image" and the filename only
  • Step 1: Import As Much As You Can From Wikipedia
  • In cases where I reference an non-Wiki database source, I also add a reference that includes a URL to the original.
  • Apple, my fallback, has an exceptional Wikidata page that I skim through whenever I'm building a company page. In particular, it lists a wealth of†databases. This helps me smooth out my entry quite a bit, and gives me some final ideas.

Is Your Google My Business Listing Getting Filtered? - Sterling Sky Inc - 0 views

  • If you have multiple locations for the same business, Google will often show the one with the highest relevance and filter others.
  • In some cases, the filter causes listings to be completely removed from the Local Finder results unless you zoom in
  • if your listing is too similar (based on criteria above) to a listing that outranks you, it will cause your listing to rank much lower because Google is trying to “diversify” the search results.
  • ...1 more annotation...
  • The listing that has the most ranking authority for that particular keyword is the one that will rank.  For example, one attorney ranks for “personal injury attorney palmdale” but a different attorney ranks for “auto accident attorney palmdale” (both are using the same address). Because a listing is filtered for one keyword does not mean that it will be filtered for other keywords.

But probably it was Google testing this. Google did send out emails to publishers who would be impacted by this French law.Anyway, you should see the new snippet controls and French change starting Friday and as it rolls out through next week.

Guidelines for representing your business on Google - Google My Business Help - 0 views

  • Publicly-facing departments that operate as distinct entities should have their own page. The exact name of each department must be different from that of the main business and that of other departments. Typically such departments have a separate customer entrance and should each have distinct categories.
  • Including unnecessary information in your business name is not permitted, and could result in your listing being suspended
  • Google can also detect category information from your website and from mentions about your business throughout the web.
  • ...4 more annotations...
  • Special characters (e.g. %&$@/") or irrelevant legal terms unless they are part of your business’s real world representation Not Acceptable: "Shell Pay@Pump", "Re/Max, LLC", "LAZ Parking Ltd"
  • You should focus primarily on adding the most specific categories for your business; we'll do the rest behind the scenes. For instance, when you select a specific category like "Golf Resort", Google implicitly includes more general categories like "Resort Hotel", "Hotel", and "Golf Course."
  • If you can't find a category for your business, choose one that is more general
  • In order to qualify for a Business Profile on Google, a business must make in-person contact with customers during its stated hours. There are some exceptions:

Should Google not trust links in all guest blog posts? - 0 views

  • Does Google even know what is a guest post and what is not? That is what Will Critchlow of Search Pilot and Brainlabs asked on Twitter. He said, “It’s also ridiculous because there is literally no way to tell from the outside whether a writer is an employee, a contractor, a freelancer, or a contributor (e.g. my status when I write for Moz.”As a matter of note; we nofollow links from our contributors here on Search Engine Land. In fact, even the links on my bio are nofollowed, and I am a daily writer here on staff at Search Engine Land. But it works. Many SEOs say that links in guest blog posts still work. It still works in that Google still somehow counts those links and they help you rank better in Google. Of course, it is almost impossible to test this to be true, since there are so many variables when it comes to ranking in Google search. But some believe it works.

How to Get a Places Label on Google Maps - 0 views

  • The place labels shown on Google Maps are determined algorithmically based on a large number of factors”.  Google only populates place labels for some businesses because, stylistically, there simply isn’t room for them all.  As you zoom in on Google Maps, different labels will start to appear that weren’t there originally.
  • According to our study, more listings (percentage-wise) that had labels also had websites on them.
  • The listings that had place labels with no zooming had an average of 6,455 reviews whereas the average number of reviews for listings without place labels was 21.
  • ...8 more annotations...
  • Older listings are more likely to have place labels.
  • If you have an editorial summary, there is a pretty good chance you’ll also get a place label
  • User engagement is likely a large factor for determining which businesses get a place label.
  • Listings that had popular times graphs on them (ie: businesses that get a lot of physical store visits) were a lot more likely to have a place label
  • In Toronto, only 5% of businesses that we looked at had an active Google post.
  • Professional services (lawyers, dentists etc) are the least likely to have them.
  • In Toronto, the businesses that had place labels in the 0-3 zoom levels had an average of 8,659 searches a month.  For the businesses that didn’t get a place label, the average was 565.
  • During this study, we looked at 12 different factors on 395 businesses in 3 different cities.  We purposely chose cities that had varying populations to see how this differed for businesses that had tons of competition.

Why Google May Use Core Web Vitals Data From Noindexed Pages - 0 views

  • Google may or may not use the Core Web Vitals metrics from pages not within Google's indexed, pages you may explicitly block from indexing, as part of its overall calculation for the upcoming Google Page Experience Update. John Mueller of Google said he believes this to be the case but is not 100% sure.

New Things I've Learned About Google Review Likes - Moz - 0 views

  • allows anyone logged into a Google account to thumbs-up any review they like
  • Google doesn’t prevent anyone from hitting the button, including owners of the business being reviewed.
  • 60 percent of the brands had earned at least one like somewhere in their review corpus.
  • ...5 more annotations...
  • 85 percent of the time, if a business had some likes, at least one liked review was making it to the front of the GBP.
  • If you found it curious that SEOs might disagree about whether or not paying for review likes is spam, I’m sorry to tell you that Google’s own staff doesn’t have brand-wide consensus on this either.
  • As a business owner, if you receive a review you appreciate, definitely go ahead and thumb it up. It may have some influence on what makes it to the highly-visible “front” of your Google Business Profile, and, even if not, it’s a way of saying “thank you” to the customer when you’re also writing your owner response.
  • If you suspect someone is artificially inflating review likes on positive or negative reviews, the Twitter Google rep suggests flagging the review.
  • In the grand scheme of things, I’d put this low on the scale of local search marketing initiatives.

Google's new Small Business Advisors program aims to help SMBs grow - 1 views

  • the company says this is not an enhanced version of Google support – although many may be tempted to see it that way. Support, Google says, is intended for troubleshooting around discrete problems, such as reinstatement or merger of duplicate listings.
  • The program cannot be used for real-time GMB verification.
  • anywhere from between 60% to 70% of SMBs don’t work with marketing agencies and are trying to manage digital marketing in house.
  • ...2 more annotations...
  • Google says that SMBs can expect discussion of two products per appointment.
  • Google local support has historically been criticized for uneven quality. This program represents a significant potential improvement for SMBs, who are often given inaccurate or self-serving marketing information by third parties seeking to sell them products. Yet the value of the program will ultimately depend on the quality of the advisors themselves and their level of expertise.

Google Title Tag Update: A Highlight for Extraction Methods & Approaches to SEO - Brodi... - 0 views

  • Google made a change to how title tags are shown for sites sometime around August 17th/18th in 2021
  • Overall, there has been a decline in the length of title tags (according to Rank Ranger) within Google’s search results on both mobile and desktop. This however doesn’t appear to be a result of a pixel limit change.
  • In some instances, the new title has been taken from header tags, internal links, image alt text, or even made up completely by Google.
  • ...2 more annotations...
  • Google really wants to make sure that the brand name is visible within the title tag, so it can be re-written to become well-suited to having the brand name on the end of the snippet.
  • Google has confirmed that when they show a different title in search results compared to what has been specified, this will not impact your rankings for that page

Google's knowledge panel: What is it and how to get one? * Yoast - 0 views

  • There are two types of knowledge panels: local panels and branded/personal panels. Google calls both of these knowledge panels, but the process of verifying them is totally different. For the local panels, verification was already possible through Google My Business.
  • For the branded and personal panels, it is much harder to obtain such a knowledge panel.
  • Google will decide whether or not to show a knowledge panel. Relevance, distance, and the prominence of the business are all important aspects for Google in determining if it’ll show knowledge panels.

An SEO guide to understanding E-E-A-T - 0 views

  • Google recently added an extra “E” to the search quality standards of E-A-T to ensure content is helpful and relevant. The extra “E” stands for “experience” and precedes the original E-A-T concept – expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness.
  • The Stanford Persuasive Technology Lab compiled 10 guidelines for building web credibility based on three-year research with over 4,500 participants. Make it easy to verify the accuracy of the information on your site. Show that there’s a real organization behind your site. Highlight the expertise in your organization and in the content and services you provide. Show that honest and trustworthy people stand behind your site. Make it easy to contact you. Design your site so it looks professional (or is appropriate for your purpose). Make your site easy to use – and useful. Update your site’s content often (at least show it’s been reviewed recently). Use restraint with any promotional content (e.g., ads, offers). Avoid errors of all types, no matter how small they seem. – Stanford Web Credibility Research If the above doesn’t scream, “Be a human, care about your users and your website experience,” I don’t know what does.
  • Experience is especially important in a digital world moving toward generative AI content
  • ...13 more annotations...
  • It’s probably no coincidence that Google announced the addition of “experience” in its search quality raters guidelines shortly after ChatGPT’s launch.
  • Besides, expertise will build confidence with the human reading your content, so I would still consider adding: The author’s name. A descriptive bio containing: Their relevant qualifications. Links to their social media profiles. A Person schema with relevant properties for certifications or professions.
  • Authority can be demonstrated in three core ways:  Establishing a strong content architecture covering all aspects of a particular topic. Earning backlinks from other authoritative sites. Building a digital profile or personal brand as an expert in a particular topic.
  • Once again, the idea of publishing content that is truly helpful supports Standford’s web credibility guidelines: Make it easy to contact you. Make it easy to verify the accuracy of the information on your site.
  • Although they carry less weight than they used to, backlinks are still an indicator of an authoritative site.
  • Consider page experience
  • Show your humans with an About us or Team page
  • Link to authoritative sources
  • Build topical clusters
  • Use internal links
  • Include different content types
  • Engage experts
  • Encourage reviews
