21st Century Pedagogy | 21st Century Connections - 1 views

  • How we teach must reflect how our students learn. It must also reflect the world our students will move into. This is a world which is rapidly changing, connected, adapting and evolving. Our style and approach to teaching must emphasise the learning in the 21st century.
    • John McMillen

One paragraph, very simple and staright forward but very powerful.
    • John Evans

Absolutely. I think most teachers are doing a good job with sentence one. It's the second statement that we need to attend to!

On Uncle Sam's role in public schools, Republicans have it backward - Yahoo! News - 0 views

  • And NCLB takes a surprisingly narrow view of "proficiency" itself, measuring it by standardized tests alone. As any teacher could tell you, such tests frequently fail to capture the real achievement – and the real deficiencies – of flesh-and-blood children. But when it comes to assessment, it's Washington's way or the highway.
    • Ed Webb

And here is the true, hideous damage that NCLB has done. This unidimensional assessment approach is now seeping into higher ed, too. Anti-educational. No child unlabeled.

This is the first year I have ever had students contact me via Facebook for help with assignments.
  • I continue to believe in the linear, author-driven narrative for educational purposes. I just don't believe the Web is optimal for delivering this experience. Instead, let's praise old narrative forms like books and sitting around a flickering campfire
  • Educators must keep a portion of the undergraduate experience disconnected, unplugged, and logged off.

And just how do pencils and blackboards form intellegence? I find the the whole "sitting around a flickering campfire" nonsense. Article seems to be written by one who wants to ignore the cultural changes taking place in how information is created and distributed. The linear, author-driven narrative is nothing more than an attempt to keep authortarian control over information and the learning process. Much of science cannot be approached in a linear fashion but has to recognize a web of relationships and interactions.

2¢ Worth » Method vs Approach - 1 views

  • how we use technology and how we teach it
    • Lee-Anne Patterson

Warlick has articulated what many have struggled to say for so long. Students are not affraid to approach technology in a more investigative way, unlike those of us from the older generation that want the right way to do things everytime.
  • You operate these devices natively, by approaching it with a certain frame of mind, not by method.
  • to kids who are at home accessing and interacting with the world from their pockets — there is a disconnect that may well be a big part of why so few of our children are interested in pursuing technology fields
    • Lee-Anne Patterson

Unfortunately many students are not encouraged to take this method of learning into the classroom. We remove the association so that they are aclimatised to learning in a more method way by their secondary education. What are we doing?

  • as educators, need to began to picture ourselves as master learners, and to project that image of ourselves to the community.  If we become enthusiastic learners, then we are modeling the concept and process of life-long learning.
    • Lee-Anne Patterson

As technology coordinators/integrators this is what we model. How many teachers within our schools also see themselves as fullfiling this role?

Futurist: To fix education, think Web 2.0 - CNET News - 0 views

  • He suggested a "hybrid" learning approach. Schools can teach essential knowledge and critical thinking through somewhat traditional means. But they should complement that teaching with what Seely Brown called "passion-based learning" that focuses on getting students more engaged with topic experts.
    • Tom March

This should be useful way for the less "techy" to accept and accomodate the contribution Web 2 can make.
