Writing Prodigy or not, this is also about expectations, support and technology - 77 views

  •
In this blog post, the story of Adora Svitak, the now 14 year old literacy prodigy is discussed in light of how her experiences growing up could be applied to developing every child's writing skills. The blog post challenges how we teach writing, how parents and teachers need to both support the learning of and expect more from children and how we need to develop good learning habits.

Education Rethink: What Didn't Happen at #ISTE12 - 3 views

"I want to see teachers stand up and speak as passionately about democracy, social justice and critical thinking as they do apps and iPads. I want to see teachers tell stories, not just about student projects, but about how standardization is getting in the way of authentic learning. I want to see us recover a vision of education as the development of critical thinking citizens rather than the kickstart campaign for a lagging economy"

According to the Government Accountability Office, cyberattacks on federal agencies jumped more than 400 percent from 2006 to 2009. And U.S. security officials say the country's defenses aren't keeping up. By one estimate, the United States needs up to 30,000 cybersecurity specialists to protect the government and large corporations. Now there are only about 1,000.

    a post about storify
  •
I love Storify!! I"ve been working with it since the summer...Here is some of my work: https://sites.google.com/site/stephsnotebook/home/storify I'd be interested in your feedback.
  •
@stephanie mccabe I'm just getting started with Storify so I don't know much about it. I love the work you did with it and I find the concept really interesting-- the ease of mixing different media to answer a question. The only concern I have is about how to get students to turn it into a cohesive written narrative (which I find is what students seem to have a harder time with). Writing seems so difficult for students these days.... What do you think?

Cut and Paste Reportage: The Rise of "Whatever Journalism" | text2cloud - 64 views

  •
What is plagiarism? A case study of a news story that keeps growing as the headlines change--racism, whites only screening, outrage--even though each story is simply a rewriting of a summary of a letter to the editor. The problem, ultimately, isn't the technology; it's the generation of readers and writers who prefer outrage to curiosity.

"So What exactly are Google Lit Trips? The short version is simple. Google Lit Trips are free downloadable files that mark the journeys of characters from famous literature on the surface of Google Earth. At each location along the journey there are placemarks with pop-up windows containing a variety of resources including relevant media, thought provoking discussion starters, and links to supplementary information about "real world" references made in that particular portion of the story.
