Area and perimeter - 54 views

  • Perimeter The perimeter of a polygon is the sum of the lengths of all its sides. Example: What is the perimeter of a rectangle having side-lengths of 3.4 cm and 8.2 cm? Since a rectangle has 4 sides, and the opposite sides of a rectangle have the same length, a rectangle has 2 sides of length 3.4 cm, and 2 sides of length 8.2 cm. The sum of the lengths of all the sides of the rectangle is 3.4 + 3.4 + 8.2 + 8.2 = 23.2 cm. Example: What is the perimeter of a square having side-length 74 cm? Since a square has 4 sides of equal length, the perimeter of the square is 74 + 74 + 74 + 74 = 4 × 74 = 296.

6.1 Learning about Multiplication Using Dynamic Sketches of an Area Model - 29 views

  • The figure below shows a rectangle with width 3 and height y. The product 3y represents the area of the 3-by-y rectangle. Change the value of y by dragging the red point up and down the vertical axis. Note that as the point is dragged, the area of the rectangle changes simultaneously.

This is a great exploration for students to begin making connections between whole number multiplication and decimal multiplication.  One modification I would make is to have students make a partition (on grid paper) to show the partial products so I could connect the figure to a symbolic algorithm for multiplication and the distributive property.  For example, if it was 1.2 x 3, the partial products might be (1x3) + (.2 x 3).

Multiplying Fractions Catchphrase - Resources - TES - 3 views

  •
Questions require pupils to multiply two given fractions. Plenary or starter game based on the tv show catchphrase. Pupils must correctly answer the question on one of the rectangles to reveal part of the 'catchphrase behind'. A great way to engage pupils and check understanding. Easily adapted to suit other topics or abilities. See the other versions I have shared - all with a different catchphrase. Picture behind could be changed to something more personalised to the class.

You bought your iPad new three years ago, and now it's getting a bit long in the tooth. Opening apps can take forever. Sometimes they crash, stop responding, or won't open to begin with. Convert PDF to CSV Tables in Tact - 6 views

  • Tabula really is a wonderful tool for extracting data from tables in PDFs. It’s a locally hosted web app that allows you to Select one or more PDFs with the data you want. Identify the area of the page from which to extract the data. Save the data in CSV, TSV, or JSON format. I gave Tabula a try on the same PDF tables I wrote about last night, and it worked perfectly. You may recall that I didn’t like the column headings in the original table. Well, Tabula let me drag a rectangle to select just the data portion of the table, leaving the stuff I didn’t want out of the extracted CSV file.
