The project-based methods used in the Digiteen Project are teaching students about digital citizenship by immersing then in authentic research and student-designed action projects. The DigiTeacher workshop is modeled after the principles used in the Digiteen Project and will use a wide variety of Web 2.0 research and collaborative tools in conjunction with project-based methods. Understand why this method works by experiencing it! Material for this workshop is found in the newly released book, 'Flattening Classrooms, Engaging Minds: Move to Global Collaboration One Step at a Time', by Vicki Davis and Julie Lindsay.

Red Deer Advocate - Catholic digital project spreads - 3 views

  •
"The St. Thomas Aquinas School digital pilot project has opened the door to allow students to use personal electronic devices throughout Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools." "Before we turn the switch to allow students to access the network with their devices, schools need to take that time to work with students on responsible digital citizenship," said Mason. Teachers, as well, could need more professional development to allow for incorporating the devices in the classroom."

Generation YES - 7 views

  •
GenYes and TechYes - new website looks great! Student leaders providing solution for technology use within schools to support project-based learning, tech integration.
  •
It would be great to see students involved in planning and managing how technology should be used in their learning. Young people already have many of the skills needed to use new technologies. They would be no doubt enthusiastic about being taking a leading role in how these would be used in their learning.

Google Has Most of My Email Because It Has All of Yours | copyrighteous - 4 views

  •
"A few years ago, I was surprised to find out that my friend Peter Eckersley - a very privacy conscious person who is Technology Projects Director at the EFF - used Gmail. I asked him why he would willingly give Google copies of all his email. Peter pointed out that if all of your friends use Gmail, Google has your email anyway. Any time I email somebody who uses Gmail - and anytime they email me - Google has that email."

PLAYBACK: Getting Involved in a Digital World-Changing Methods and Mindsets | Spotlight... - 0 views

  • Overcoming the New Stereotypes: Newly created obstacles might be getting in the way of change, though. We have discussed the problems with the term “digital natives” before (see Trebor Scholz). The term—which refers to a younger generation that has grown up with technology and that supposedly processes information fundamentally differently than older generations (“digital immigrants”) who have merely adopted the technology as it has emerged—is a deceptive metaphor, according to Henry Jenkins, and a intimidating obstacle for teachers, according to Susan Zvacek, director of instructional development at the University of Kansas.
  • One of the key arguments we are making is that the role of educators needs to shift away from being expert in a particular area of knowledge, to becoming expert in the ability to create and shape new learning environments. In a way, that is a much more challenging, but also much more rewarding, role.

These same educators need to take on a 'leadership' mindset in order to facilitate change and development in learning. Teacher librarians can help allay anxieties of the 'new pedagogical paradigm'.
  • The other major part of upgrading ourselves, or at least my view of it, is to understand the macro trends and issues in our society that affect our ability to get the most out of the media we consume and create.
  •
A new survey from the Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project finds that 80 percent of internet users participate in some kind of voluntary group or organization, compared to just 56 percent of non-internet users. And if you use social media, the percentages are even higher: 85 percent of Twitter users, for example, are group participants.

'Bring Your Own Device' Catching On in Schools| The Committed Sardine - 5 views

  •
"Mobile devices are now found in the hands of most children, and school leaders are using that to their advantage by incorporating devices that students already own into classroom lessons and projects. Concerns remain about students who are unable to purchase or borrow a device for use in the classroom, but districts might find creative ways-such as asking local businesses or community organizations for help-to provide devices in such instances, advocates of the trend say. With access issues in mind, allowing students to bring their own devices from home can offer educational benefits, as well as some surprisingly positive results when it comes to creative thinking and classroom behavior."

It's interesting that the school districts mentioned in this article are embracing "BYOT", while other schools around the world continue to clamp down on students' tech use, banning devices instead of educating about ethical use.

Enabling pillars: Learning, technology, community, partnership. A report on Australian ... - 1 views

  •
This study of policies for information and communication technologies (ICT) in education and training in Australian education systems and agencies is the initial component in a project undertaken for the Australian Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST). The project comprises three components: the development of a searchable online data base where policies, both Australian and international, are summarised, and which can be accessed through edna (http://www.edna.edu.au); this report on Australian developments; an international report covering ten countries in Europe, North America and Asia, as well as Australian systems. The Australian report provides the platform for the comparative analysis of the international report.
