In New-Tritional Info, students use rates and proportions to calculate how long they'd have to exercise to burn off different McDonald's menu items and explore this even further in two project tasks, Have It Your Way and Would You Like Fries with That?

Although this project was created for a specific area in California, I feel that I could use the foundation and create a PBL unit that would involve a problem that my students and I have noticed on the shorelines near to the airbase here.

I love this. I admit I have had the same thought ("how would a blended guru like Sal Khan feel about PBL?"), so it is really cool to see his take. Great resource for anyone tinkering with blended elements of learning alongside our little PBL adventure!

POGIL | Home - 2 views

  • POGIL uses guided inquiry – a learning cycle of exploration, concept invention and application – as the basis for many of the carefully designed materials that students use to guide them to construct new knowledge.   POGIL is a student-centered strategy; students work in small groups with individual roles to ensure that all students are fully engaged in the learning process. POGIL activities focus on core concepts and encourage a deep understanding of the course material while developing higher-order thinking skills. POGIL develops process skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, and communication through cooperation and reflection, helping students become lifelong learners and preparing them to be more competitive in a global market.

    Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning

I love POGIL and have helped spread the love in my department. My students have really responded positively to having assigned roles which I rotate and randomly assign. The key is really reinforcing those roles every time because it gives control and voice to some kids who would never take it on their own.

Here's a great project that I found in my search of PBL units. I really took to this particular project because it has to do with the CTE field, and the department I am in has worked closely with district CTE specialists in the development of a relatively new Computer Essentials course that all 7th graders in our district must complete. I would like to develop a PBL unit for that course that teachers could use, if they wished to do so, and this project gave me some great ideas!
