Bishops Denounce Abortion - 2 views

  •
The U.S. Roman Catholic bishops issued a pastoral letter that would criticize abortion and end the disgrace of having an abortion under law.
  •
My mother was born to an unwed 15 year old in 1940. My mother was given away in adoption to a family member. My grandmother wanted to have my mom (she had fallen in love with a service man who was killed in German) but her mom wanted her to have an abortion. It was illegal in those days and my grandmother refused to go to the "special doctor." So she was shipped away to a home for girls like her in Chicago to have my mom. My story is different then most. I am a product of a saved baby. Without my grandmother fighting for my mom, myself, my brother, my children, we would be dead. It is harder to speak to a child that survived abortion. No one has the right to tell me that we do not have the right to live. I am so grateful that abortion was illegal. I am so grateful that my beautiful children are alive. We are blessed.
  •
Whenever this issue comes up one thing always pops into my head. My body, my choice. I am a female that was born and raised in the Catholic church and had to listen to this stuff for years. It never made sense to me why so many people try revoking this right from women. If you don't support it, fine. However, to take the option away from women who do want abortion as an option opens up even more negative doors. When women do not have a safe environment to discuss these options and the operation itself is made illegal then women who are desperate are more likely to go to back alley doctors or try to perform their own abortion. This often leads to more deaths among women whether it be from a botched, cheap operation or a horrific infection. It should also be noted that each woman is different. They might want the option of abortion for various reasons. Perhaps something is wrong with the child, and the doctors note it won't live past a couple of days, maybe the woman was raped and ended up pregnant, perhaps the fetus was dying and was also killing the mother, perhaps the woman just doesn't want children. You never know the circumstances of why a woman chooses to have an abortion, and they should never be judged for it or have that right revoked.

What is Happening to Females in Afghanistan? - 2 views

  •
The IRC (International Rescue Committee) is seriously concerned about females rights in Afghanistan. Females should be able to work, go to school, and move freely. As of August 2021, the response plan funding for women and girls has drastically diminished making them more prone to violence, child labor, and forced marriages. Since international support has slowly been fading away, almost 1 million children will miss out on education.
  •
Despite the article referring to women and young girls distinctly why choose to rename your bookmark and pointedly refer to them as females rather than as the article intends? Your article covers rather dehumanizing issues so it strikes me as odd that out of all this your choice was to choose a word you could apply to any non human mammal rather than the women of Afghanistan. Did you not think that the article used the language "women and girls" for the reason of both humanization and to clarify that perhaps the rights of a female mammal weren't at stake here but the human population that happens to be female?

The Right to Assisted Suicide - 2 views

  •
In this article it discusses people view on assisted suicide. People who are for assisted suicide believe it saves money, saves them personally from unnecessary suffering, and lets the individual determine their own faith. They believe is should be done with a physicians help.

  •
The article describes the debate to allow a person to choose euthanasia. The author looks at two points of view. One view sees the assisted suicide as compassionate. The other view sees it as murder; regardless of the circumstances.
  •
A hot topic after the recent rise in mental health awareness is weather or not suicide should be legal/assisted. This author talks about terminally ill patients and, patients with chronic pain that has no relief. Should they be given the choice? How would we decide who gets to choose and who does not?
  •
this article shows us the debates of assisted suicide I the sense of someone being hospitalized and being medically treated but has chance of dying. the article shows us arguments of if the person that being hospitalized is in great pain or on the last stages of dying they have the right to ask for the plus to be pulled. now reading this article you feel in sense of who is right and who is wrong in the issue and if these patients should have that choice or not.

FYI, Arizona Legislators: Banning 'Social Justice' Courses Is Not a Pro-Free Speech Move - 1 views

  •
Apparently in Arizona they are trying to ban courses teaching Social Justices. This isn't right. Students have every right to learn whatever they want to learn, and the government shouldn't be a part of what people want to learn about at school. If it's offered they should be able to take it.
  •
I can't believe. Banning social justice courses is like hiding the ugly truth. We, students, basically have the right to choose what we want to study.

Can Employers Make Potential Candidates be Only Non-Smokers? - 1 views

  •
As a general rule employers are allowed to choose not not hire a candidate if in there pre-screening they screen for such toxins as nicotine. The employer has the right to choose who they hire but in most cases can not fire you for later becoming a smoker. American Civil Rights activists continue to argue that this can be and is a potential discrimination issue.

Equal Pay - 5 views

  •
Women deserve equal pay. On average, they are paid less than their male counterparts. It effects their spending power and what women receive in their social security.
  • ...3 more comments...
  •
This is a really good article because it also talks about how race affects the pay gap. Most articles I find on the topic ignore how non-white women are paid less than white women. The struggle for mothers attempting to reenter the workplace is horrible.
  •
A reality unfortunately, in our society. It is almost hilarious how you read on all papers when you are hired :"we are an equal opportunity employer, no discrimination of any kind..." and yet the first thing you notice is the pay you get in comparison with a man who is less qualified than you but...he is a man. And, as kat2222004 pointed, very hard for mothers to reenter the work field, the mother is not trusted anymore to be a reliable employee.
  •
Really good article. I saw this as I was choosing a topic to discuss in our discussion last week. I 100% agree that women should receive the same pay as men. Women are such hard workers whether it is in the work force, or for those who have to maintain a family as well.
  •
The 77 cent claim has been repeatedly refuted because it does not accommodate for the fact that women are more likely to choose lower paying jobs or jobs with benefits. Men on average work longer hours. Single, childless women in major cities earn more than men. Women obtain 58% of college degrees. Women are less likely to go into STEM jobs. Also statistics are easily manipulated. Watch TJ explain the wage gap https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KWAlg48fNwE
  •
I definitely agree with this article. Even if some people like to think this isn't a problem it definitely is. For men and women in the same field regardless of what that field is men often get the higher income than women do. My mother is a major example of this and often talks about how the men in the same department as her make more money even when they produce less work that generally isn't that good. On top of that my mother works the same amount of hours and even more than average in a given week yet still doesn't come close to the pay gap. Of course, there may be inconsistency in statistics but it is definitely still an issue to be aware of because it still exists.

Internet Privacy - 0 views

We have right to privacy as said in the outdated Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA) but our information and our whereabouts on the internet are still being documented and sold to high paying customers. We shouldn't have to choose between future technology and our right to privacy.

FOCA ammendment - 0 views

  •
As introduced in the 110th Congress, the "Freedom of Choice Act"(FOCA) (S. 1173, H.R. 1964) declares that it is the policy of the United States that every woman has the "fundamental right" to terminate a pregnancy. The act prohibits government at every level (federal, state, and local) from "interfering" with a woman's right to choose, and from "discriminating" against the exercise of this right.

Smoking ban: Valid or Infringement? | Daily Sundial - 0 views

  •
This article is about the recent smoking bans implemented, specifically in universities, and whether this ban infringes on our freedom to choose. Drinking and Driving - 3 views

  •
Making the right decision some time means safe life's. Drinking and driving is one of the big mistakes that people make during their life's.
  • ...2 more comments...
  •
Drinking and driving is very common in today's society. I like this article because not only does it provide facts about faculties, but also provided a visual emotional touch while reading. People are effected everyday due to someone driving under the influence or while intoxicated. It's good we have things like Uber, taxi's, and buses that help lead away from driving drunk, which in return will lead to safer roads.
  •
It's still upsetting to me how much of a problem this is in society. It's not anything new yet it still hasn't been stopped and that needs to change.
  •
Drinking and driving is not only wrong, but its completely selfish. You are not only putting your life in danger, but you are also putting others in danger. There are many different routes you can take rather than just getting into your car intoxicated.
  •
Ugh, I hate that no matter how many times you can say to someone "please call me and ill pick you up" and they still choose to drive themselves home because they do not want to "bother" you. This is such a big issue in our society that everyone needs to learn to stop doing. I feel that Uber is helping in some way lately though!

When should personal freedom yield to the common good? - 3 views

  •
Here is an article about people having personal freedom to not take the vaccine and risk peoples lives around them. There is also the argument of people should abide the government restrictions, and wear masks during the pandemic.
  •
It seems you have found a good article with sound resources for information and in depth analysis on the human trend of morality and how it relates to the issue at hand of personal freedom in the midst of the pandemic. Its interesting to see the history behind the debate of "common good" in Typhoid Mary and how her story relates to todays issues. Though the article shows a bias, it is clear that they cite their sources and are presenting information clearly for the reader to form an opinion albeit the article is hoping the reader forms an opinion of questioning the ways in which Americans choose to embrace their personal freedoms. Great find!
  •
I love this article, it explains both sides. People who want to follow government regulations and those who don't. I think personal freedom is a big thing, we all have our own opinions and feelings. It's important for everyone to respect others wishes and feelings.
