Personal Freedoms vs The Common Good - 0 views

  •
This article says how freedom is good as long as it has a common good in the end. Freedom without a good cause will end up in a "jungle"
  •
Personal Freedom and the common good are the two things put in perspective. Gun rights versus gun control.

When should personal freedom yield to the common good? - 3 views

  •
Here is an article about people having personal freedom to not take the vaccine and risk peoples lives around them. There is also the argument of people should abide the government restrictions, and wear masks during the pandemic.
  •
It seems you have found a good article with sound resources for information and in depth analysis on the human trend of morality and how it relates to the issue at hand of personal freedom in the midst of the pandemic. Its interesting to see the history behind the debate of "common good" in Typhoid Mary and how her story relates to todays issues. Though the article shows a bias, it is clear that they cite their sources and are presenting information clearly for the reader to form an opinion albeit the article is hoping the reader forms an opinion of questioning the ways in which Americans choose to embrace their personal freedoms. Great find!
  •
I love this article, it explains both sides. People who want to follow government regulations and those who don't. I think personal freedom is a big thing, we all have our own opinions and feelings. It's important for everyone to respect others wishes and feelings.

Definitely a common thing I've seen in the fitness industry. People can sometimes get so wrapped up in trying to be lean and fit that they go about it in the wrong ways. They literally workout to the point of exhaustion and then barely refuel their bodies with the necessary nutrients. Which causes more harm than good.
  •
Eating disorders are a tragedy, and a sickness. It is definitely evident in this country, more so than where I come form in Canada, as image is more important in America according to studies, appearance can take someone further than education, which is truly sad. Which leads to more people being self conscious, and more eating disorders.
  •
Eating disorders affect a great deal of American teenagers and young adults, and a big reason is because society sets standards as to what a male or female's ideal body should look like. Rather than trying to live up to society's standards, people should try to live up to a standard of health for their own bodies.
  •
This social issue has been around for many years and it is still a huge issue in the world. I like this article due to the fact that it gives you information on the disorders such as treatments, signs and statistics. All people should be educated on the subject.
  •
I think that this situation is sort of a "hush hush" situation so I think it is great that people are talking out about it. If more people talk about it, then maybe people that are suffering from situations like this can be open about it and about getting help. I also think that people opening up about it, will open up societies eyes and realize that people are suffering from this mostly because of the pressure people have to look how society wants.
  •
People are so wrapped up on having the perfect body that they fail to realize their hurting themselves. Eating disorders are very tragic, but are also very common these days. We start to think that just because one plan worked for someone else it will work for everyone. The truth is, everyone's body is different and reacts differently too.

Education Is Social Justice - 1 views

  •
It is everyones right to have the opportunity to receive a good education. Education and knowledge are said to be the best quality. With this said it takes a lot of self motivation, but some kids just don't have access to education.

An article by Greg Mullenholz on the fact that education is a social justice issue within our society. He calls education "a dividing line between success and failure" and states that access to high quality teachers and education is a key component to helping students who are underprivileged to receive the future they deserve.
  •
This is an interesting perspective. I do believe education in America needs to be improved and the lack of action will cause America to become irrelevant in our modern era. I believe we need to reform our education system that is already in place and have families make it a higher priority rather than have the federal government mandate a solution.
  •
Education may be one of the biggest social justice issues because it is one of the main factors that determine a productive future instead of incarceration. The article states that "education was the dividing line between success and failure." There is a need for high-quality teachers along with equal opportunity for a good education among all different income levels.
  •
An article discussing the importance of education in society. The main idea is that under performing schools demand a certain skill set and access to funding in order to provide a path to success for their student base, and the unfortunate truth that this practice is not existent. School is the corner stone for the success of children and current standards and practices have created inequality across the nation
  •
Education being a social justice issue is nothing out of the norm. Education is not just about teaching common core programs but, it is also a place to teach kids and adults how to protect the dignity of humanity. Education is a huge dividing line between being successful and unsuccessful.

Defunding police: What it means and what it could look like - CNN - 5 views

  •
Defunding the Police Departments does not mean disbanding law enforcement. Excess funds can be distributed to other services (education, healthcare, housing, ect.)
  • ...6 more comments...
  •
Defunding the police and distributing that money to further establish other parts of the government can honestly change so much and for the better as well.
  •
this article gives a better understanding to what "defund the police" really means. By putting funds into other areas that need it, there can be a lot of good done in America.
  •
this article is very helpful in the way that most people think that defunding the police means disbandment when really it is just taking the extra funds and putting in other necessary services.
  •
Great article to explain the common misconceptions on what it means to defund the police. The positive to this is the benefits other sectors of the government would have such as education.
  •
I agree it does not mean to get rid of the police. but overly funding a facility while ignoring schools and healthcare systems is not okay either.
  •
This is a good, informative article. Other organizations need more funding, and I believe that funding them is only fair.
  •
This article really shows what it looks when the community doesn't feel safe and how the people are moving to make it safe and put money somewhere else.
  •
I'm glad that this article gives the information this country needs when talking about defunding the police. Many interpret that in the wrong way which has divided our country even more.

Making the Economic Case for More Than the Minimum Wage - 1 views

  •
In his January 2014 State of the Union address, President Obama called for a new federal minimum wage of $10.10 an hour. The year before, in the same speech, he proposed a $9 minimum wage. This article addresses the different reasons to increase and the issues with increasing the minimum wage. it discusses how it has changed over the years and states that the original minimum wage was 25 cents an hour back in 1938. There are quite a few interesting stats in this article.
  •
I definitely that Obamas move to raise the minimum wage has caused more problems than it has done good. It's only created a sense of working less, doing less for more pay. People don't want to work hard, get an education, or persue a career goal in order to make money. It's seems more common that people just want what's easy and what gives them the most for their own selfish desires.

Aspartame Use Surges in Children's Drinks - 1 views

  •
A heavily debated topic is in regard to the use of sugar substitutes such as aspartame and sucralose. Common brands are Splenda, NutraSweet, and etc. Research has shown that these "healthy, weight loss" sugar-free substitutes are unsafe and are causing more harm then good. This article specifically talks about how children's drinks are being targeted, and currently contain more of these sweeteners, such as aspartame, and increased by 200% during the study period. This is not only affecting children, as there has been a 54% increase of artificial sweeteners in adult foods and beverages as well.

Drinking and Driving - 3 views

  •
Making the right decision some time means safe life's. Drinking and driving is one of the big mistakes that people make during their life's.
  • ...2 more comments...
  •
Drinking and driving is very common in today's society. I like this article because not only does it provide facts about faculties, but also provided a visual emotional touch while reading. People are effected everyday due to someone driving under the influence or while intoxicated. It's good we have things like Uber, taxi's, and buses that help lead away from driving drunk, which in return will lead to safer roads.
  •
It's still upsetting to me how much of a problem this is in society. It's not anything new yet it still hasn't been stopped and that needs to change.
  •
Drinking and driving is not only wrong, but its completely selfish. You are not only putting your life in danger, but you are also putting others in danger. There are many different routes you can take rather than just getting into your car intoxicated.
  •
Ugh, I hate that no matter how many times you can say to someone "please call me and ill pick you up" and they still choose to drive themselves home because they do not want to "bother" you. This is such a big issue in our society that everyone needs to learn to stop doing. I feel that Uber is helping in some way lately though!

Demi Lovato On Fighting Mental Illness Stigma And Finding Peace - 1 views

  •
This article is an interview with Demi Lovato explaining her own issues with mental health. She also speaks about the stigma and more.
  •
Mental health is more common than people realize. It's good to see more people advocating mental health issues in the public. It shows that you are not alone.
  •
I'm glad they are starting to come out with campaigns to help people understand mental illness. These issues effect so many people and they don't feel they can talk about it.

Identifying Bullying as a Social Justice Issue - 3 views

  •
This article discusses Identity-Based Bullying and what it is. Identity-Based Bullying is a form of discrimination against others and should be stopped.
  • ...1 more comment...
  •
Unfortunately, bullying is a common social justice issue and there are many different types of bullying and there are many ways students, parents and school administration can help prevent bullying of others.
  •
Bullying needs to be recognized in all levels. Most people think that bullying just happens at school with children on the playground but they should realize that it can happen to adults and in all types of environments.
  •
I wrote about child abuse. I think that this is a good topic because bullying is similar to abuse. There is a victim, and a perpetrator. I also believe bullying can stem from being abused or neglected at home.

The 19 Biggest Food Problems in America - 2 views

  •
This article shows you through cartoon and facts on how food in America is leading to the reason why obesity is so common here. It shows in one of the summary that a school can consider pizza as a vegetable because of the tomato paste they use as sauce and how we are so used to the GMO in foods that the organic stuff doesn't taste as good to use and makes people not want to buy it, not to mention the higher price of the food that is better for you.
  • ...1 more comment...
  •
Reading this article was actually really disgusting to think about. Just thinking that tomato paste is a form of vegetable is crazy. We really need to step it up.
  •
To me that wasn't very shocking. I know that mountain dew is banned in Europe because of a toxic chemical(brominated vegetable oil BVO) that is illegal in Europe to use in food. And there are many more I know of. It is scary that in this country nobody really cares about educating people about what they eat. What is worse is that the perception is, that the government doesn't give a damn about what is in our food.
  •
It's so sad to see America keep rising on the list for obesity. It honestly makes me scared to eat certain foods. Foods with GMO's are nearly no where near what they used to be. They used to be so mild and didn't have all of the other crazy chemicals in them. I wish we would go back to how it used to be. I can't wait to get my own house so that I can have my own little chickens and my own garden.

Abortion: Women's Right and Wrongs - 2 views

  •
Laws that restrict abortion have the effect and purpose of preventing a woman from exercising any of her human rights. The abortion-rights debate is commonly misunderstood, with advocates on both sides attributing false motives to many good, deeply conscientious people. Denying women access to abortion is a form of gender discrimination.

I still cannot believe that in Texas its legal now after 6 weeks, I do not think a man should have a opinion on a women's body at all!
  •
I like how this article used their own experience of feeling different towards the argument int the past to help boost their side. But I completely agree that men should not have an opinion on a woman's body, but also if they do have an issue with abortion then they need to take preventing unwanted pregnancies more seriously!
  •
This is the most common social issue that I see brought up/discussed. The author is this article did a great job including her own personal experiences with abortion laws. Unlike a lot of the articles on the topic, it was not cut and dry full of laws and instead replaced with actual opinions/experiences. I see this topic coming up more especially as Texas recently passed a law that woman would not be able to receive abortions past 6 weeks of fetus age.
