Study Finds Majority of Kids Lagging in Cognitive Skills By 3rd Grade - 1 views

  •
A recent report released by the Annie E. Casey Foundation suggests that only about one-third of children in grade school meet expectations in cognitive ability by 3rd grade. Additionally, children from low-income families were much less likely to be on track in areas such as physical development, social/emotional growth, and school engagement. The report noted a distinct relation between family education and earnings. According to the data collected from families of children under the age of 8, half of the families who earned a higher income had a head of household with at least a 4-year college degree. In contrast, the head of household in the majority of low-income families had at best a high school diploma.

This is such a shame, and I am sure this is very frustrating for both parents and teachers. I really enjoyed helping in my daughters' classes but did see firsthand students who were struggling. Funding for education is not where it should be so classes don't have aides and assistants to spend extra time working with kids who need additional help.

Should Health Care Cover Contraceptions? - 0 views

  •
With the current debate over the funding of planned parenthood I thought it would be fitting to add this in. Should contraceptive services be provided to women regardless of their employers personal beliefs?
  •
Absolutely. Contraception is a medication used for many other health issues. Even though the main use is to prevent pregnancy, should you prevent others from using it to slow ovarian cyst growth? Most diabetes medicine has a side effect of weight loss. Should this medication be stopped, because weight loss drugs aren't covered by health insurance?

Preventing Overcrowding & Other School Impacts of Poorly Planned Growth - 0 views

  •
Overcrowding in classes often limits how much help students can get. Overcrowding in classrooms takes away that one-on-one time teachers need to have with their students. It will be harder for teachers to fund a study plan that works for everyone.

The Effects of Immigration on the United States' Economy - Penn Wharton Budget Model - 2 views

  •
An article from a college about statistics and effects immigration has on our economy. Negative or positive you make up your mind on how immigration effects us.
  •
Definitely a topic I always find myself neutral. I try to have positive outlooks with the U.S. being the number 1 with the immigration. I get that most immigrants come here for the American dream (freedom) but then I think shouldn't they come here the right way by becoming a citizen first? Since we would have to as well if we were to go live in their countries. Then I see stuff on the news in the U.S. about shootings, bombs, etc caused by an immigrant. That would be my negative outlook.
  •
This article was very interesting. I have often wondered what the effects of immigration are, and if they affect the economy positively or negatively.

By 2100, it will once again have taken approximately 100 years for the population to double to a predicted 10.8 billion. While data is collected on population growth, it is difficult for even sustainability professionals to understand what will happen globally when the world's population reaches 10 or 15 billion people.
