Many educational resources from the BBC - separated by level. Although with a "British" twist for vocabulary, well worth checking out. The "questionnaut" on the KS2 Bitesize page is quite different than typical US review games.

Some years ago I taught a life skills class to a group of eighth grade boys. The curriculum I offered wasn't working. They were disengaged -- they wouldn't read, write, or talk about what I wanted them to talk about -- and they were mounting a rebellion.

      Good comment by Will Richardson
  • our ability to access people (potential teachers) and content (curriculum) on our own and, importantly, share the artifacts of that self-directed learning with others is having as much if not a greater effect on "how we learn" than the digital content providers who are really just repackaging a traditional education online.

Weblogg-ed » Don't, Don't, Don't vs. Do, Do, Do - 11 views

  • I wondered aloud to some administrators and teachers later if the stiff policies spoke volumes about what they weren’t teaching in their classrooms K-12 as their students went through the system. I mean wouldn’t it seem that if kids were taught throughout the curriculum about the ethical and appropriate use of computers and the Internet that much more of that policy could be spent going over what students could actually do with the computer rather than the “don’t dos” that were listed? At that point, we’d probably have to change the name to an “Admirable Use Policy” or something, but imagine if students walked in on the first day of class, picked up that policy and read things like:
  • “Do use our network to connect to other students and adults who share your passions with whom you can learn.” “Do use our network to help your teachers find experts and other teachers from around the world.” “Do use our network to publish your best work in text and multimedia for a global audience.” “Do use our network to explore your own creativity and passions, to ask questions and seek answers from other teachers online.” “Do use our network to download resources that you can use to remix and republish your own learning online.” “Do use our network to collaborate with others to change the world in meaningful, positive ways.”

Royal Society Study into Computing in Schools | News | BCS Academy of Computing - 1 views

  • There is, however, a serious shortage of Computing specialist teachers and of easy to use, inspirational classroom-ready Computing material.
  • They struggle to convince their school senior management of the need for more Computing within the ICT curriculum.
  • Ensuring everyone can be an intelligent user of IT is vital. However, being an accomplished IT user is not the same as having a basic understanding of the principles of Computing.
  •
There is a serious problem with the way we are educating our young people about Computing.  The majority of students leave school actively disliking what they mistakenly believe to be Computing. As a result applications to UK University Computer Science courses have collapsed by 60% since 2000, yet the demand for software professionals across the EU has grown
