If you think about how we use technology in our adult lives, it’s primarily a communication experience — email, WebEx, text messages and collaboration tools. It’s social, but we’re not letting these collaborative tools into the classroom.
If we don’t, we will lose their attention, and to some degree, their respect.
But they’ll do better by constructing meaning from it socially — not alone with a text
Technology is all the rage when it comes to reinvigorating classrooms around the globe. But is that for a good reason or just because it's fun to play with? Do students actually prefer e-books over print? How many students actually own iPads? A new study by marketing research firm Student Monitor has been released and turned into an infographic. Because who likes looking at actual data anymore?

In an adaption of Ch. 1 from one of his books, Larry Ferlazzo focused on intrinsic motivation, and suggested, for example,"People are more motivated and confident when they feel they have more control over their environment. Inviting students to have a voice in classroom decisions-where they sit, what day a test takes place, in what order units are studied, or even where a plant should be placed in the classroom-can help them develop that greater sense of control" (Creating Opportunities for Students to Help Make Decisions, para. 1).

Asked to assess their students' performance on nine specific writing skills, teachers tended to rate their students "good" or "fair" as opposed to "excellent" or "very good." Students received the best ratings on their ability to "effectively organize and structure writing assignments" and their ability to "understand and consider multiple viewpoints on a particular topic or issue." Teachers gave students the lowest ratings when it comes to "navigating issues of fair use and copyright in composition" and "reading and digesting long or complicated texts."

Stronger vision, leadership, and willingness to model social media use and engage students in these spaces likely would help a gread deal here. Conversation leads to learning/understanding. Harsh discipline simply leads to compliance much of the time.
