La redéfinition des rapports entre centre et périphéries urbaines est souvent décrite comme la montée d'une condition métropolitaine. Étudiant les modes de vie des habitants de Marne-la-Vallée, Nathalie Brevet souligne plutôt l'affaiblissement de leur dimension métropolitaine, au profit de l'ancrage local. L'ouvrage de Nathalie Brevet nous donne à réfléchir sur l'autonomisation (relative !) des villes nouvelles et constitue une contribution majeure aux études urbaines portant sur le lien entre les mobilités et l'habiter.

About a year ago, NRDC's executive director, Peter Lehner, asked me what one word, if I had to choose, would most closely describe a smart, sustainable community.  Peter thought that the word might be density.  But I chose walkability instead. It is important to have a certain (though not necessarily high) level of density in a sustainable neighborhood.  But we also need the right design, with connected streets, a pleasant environment that incorporates a variety of places to go and things to do, and that includes nature.  We need our community to feel and be safe for us to be out and about.  (The popsicle and Halloween tests are instructive here.)  All these things contribute to walkability.

Projet européen conclu mi 2012 : "The smart city concept is multi-dimensional. It is a future scenario (what to achieve), even more it is an urban development strategy (how to achieve it). It focuses on how (Internet-related) technologies enhance the lives of citizens. This should not be interpreted as drawing the smart city technology scenario. Rather, the smart city is how citizens are shaping the city in using this technology, and how citizens are enabled to do so. The smart city is about how people are empowered, through using technology, for contributing to urban change and realizing their ambitions. The smart city provides the conditions and resources for change. In this sense, the smart city is an urban laboratory, an urban innovation ecosystem, a living lab, an agent of change. Much less do we see a smart city in terms of a Ranking. This ranking is a moment in time, a superficial result of underlying changes, not the mechanism of transformation. The smart city is the engine of transformation, a generator of solutions for wicked problems, it is how the city is behaving smart."

Entretien avec Loïc Blondiaux: "Les municipalités sont devenues les lieux de l'innovation sociale et politique, car elles disposent des leviers pour susciter la contribution des citoyens. Pour les élus, il existe aujourd'hui un catalogue de techniques et d'outils assez complet, qui va des discussions de groupe jusqu'aux plates-formes de contributions en ligne et aux budgets participatifs, efficaces quand ils font l'objet d'un vrai travail de concertation et de restitution."
