Skeuomorphism & Storytelling / Tobias Bjerrome Ahlin - 0 views

  • Designers love to hate skeuomorphism. It’s just decoration, they say. It’s completely useless. It will go out of style. Or as Mark Boulton, co-founder of Five Simple Steps, put it on twitter: I really wish everyone would stop making digital things look like real things. A screen is not a drop shadowed, bevelled, wooden plank. Yet Apple and many other software developers continue to use it heavily in some of their apps. Many hate without asking: Why? Why is Apple and so many others continuing down this path? They have all lost their sense of good design, surely. No?
  • Skeuomorphism is about communcating and reinforcing feelings – getting an application to become a memorable experience, not just a tool. It’s about communicating the purpose of a UI, not only the functions it enables.
  • An interface that is not only easy to use, but fun to use, engages the user and creates an experience where obstacles are easier to overcome, and thus an experience where the product is easier and more effortless to use. Done right, skeuomorphism can retain the simplicity and ease of use of an interface while empowering users to act.

What You Need to Know About Usability - 1 views

  • There is no point in having a beautiful layout where the user simply can’t achieve basic tasks. If a system is difficult to use, users will leave and probably won’t return. Stop focusing on getting exposure, and start focusing on making your system usable and engaging for your visitors.

Why The iPad Is a Learning Tool by Sesh Kumar : Learning Solutions Magazine - 1 views

  • as a learning tool, the iPad’s single-screen interface reduces elements of interruption and potentially enhances user orientation to a specific task. An abundance of features can be a disturbance to the cognitive process, and educators often prefer mobile devices without distractive features like messaging and phone calls.
  • Modern educators are voicing the need for learning to be more contextual and engaging. Mobile phones and digital whiteboards add a level of interactivity, but not a lot of computing power, and a laptop is not always convenient.
  • The iPad fills this gap by enabling a host of activities such as referencing, collaborating, and creating content. In an August 2010 Wired.com article, “The Web Is Dead. Long Live the Internet,” the transformation from open Web browsing to specialized apps was a change driven by the Apple model of mobile computing. The iPad leverages this trend by providing personalized choice of content, a big plus for student users.

Getting Started With Mobile Learning - 1 views

  •
Mobile learning 2.0 is more about creating learning experiences-engaging and challenging activities that result in significant changes to knowledge and behavior. If you find that there is a particular advantage to being mobile, then look at the end goal of what you're trying to achieve and reverse-engineer it. One of the decisions you will need to make is whether or not to develop your mobile learning application within your company or to use a custom developer.

  • Gamification is the concept that you can apply the basic elements that make games fun and engaging to things that typically aren't considered a game. Examples are Frequent Flyer Programs, Wii Fit, badges in Foursquare, etc. The possible applications of game dynamics are nearly infinite with many believing that gamification will impact everything from the web to education, health, and work.

Half of UK companies risk "corporate suicide" by banning Facebook and Twitter - Marketi... - 1 views

  • Facebook is such a popular application that is so widely used for personal and business uses, it makes no business sense to ban it. If companies do not address this they could be at the mercy of corporate suicide
  • Social networking is like food and drink to Generation Y workers, they are so used to communicating in a more open and collaborative way. Therefore, forward looking companies should be aiming to encourage social media activity amongst their employees rather than stifling it
    • Kartini Ishak

I couldn't agree more with this final statement stating that social networking is vital to Gen Y workers. We communicate more openly and collaboratively through this medium. And it should be encouraged rather than being stopped.
  •
Thanks Kartini! I strongly agree too. To add on to your point, I think for the Gen-Yers, social media tools also facilitate on-going collaboration by engaging the emotive power of relational bonds to help bring everyone onto the same page. I remember reading this in my Media Theories module: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agenda-setting_theory... hope you find it relevant! "Agenda-setting theory is the theory that the news media have a large influence on audiences by their choice of what stories to consider newsworthy and how much prominence and space to give them. Agenda-setting theory's main postulate is salience transfer. Salience transfer is the ability of the news media to transfer issues of importance from their news media agendas to public agendas. Through their day-by-day selection and display of the news, editors and news directors focus our attention and influence our perceptions of what are the most important issues of the day. This ability to influence the salience of topics on the public agenda has come to be called the agenda setting role of the news media."

Customer Support Can't Keep Up With Rise of Social Media | PCWorld Business Center - 0 views

  • Many companies have social media presence on sites such as Twitter and Facebook and create mobile applications but have not set up the infrastructure to deliver the same level of customer support as their more traditional communication channels
  • The report noted a "huge rise" in the number of customers who now use social networking sites and mobile commerce for business transactions, and said customer service in those areas was often isolated and not keeping pace
  • It is important for companies to fully embrace these newer channels by taking the lead in not only addressing the marketing aspects, but also in developing integrated support to ensure customers receive consistent treatment and quality problem-resolution over their social media and m-commerce communication channels.
  • ...1 more annotation...
  • Companies that expanded their social networking and mobile interaction could increase customer engagement, monitor feedback, generate sales, cut advertising costs and offer location based services
  •
    It's important to keep up.
