Shows brainstorming, text talk time, and writing --an overview, shown with with ELLs in middle school. Each aspect of the student interactions demonstrates a Common Core theme or principle. Nice titling in the video makes clear what the concepts are. A good demonstration of excellence in teaching.

Discusses the need for children's emotional commitment to the subject read and discussed in English classes. (What does one do with math?) While standardized texts (and tests) don't value emotional appeal, students turn again and again to feeling-packed books and poems. So avoid the "agnostic" or neutral texts that have no interest level and instead, go for the power punch. EFL students often complain that English can't express emotions. Find the power.

Stannard gives a quick overview of http://www.rhymes.net, which helps you find words that rhyme with other words. But he doesn't mention that the site speaks the word too! There are also many other tools, such as a dictionary, words with multi-syllables, quotations using the word, phrases, abbreviations, etc. Great for vocabulary work, pronunciation, and writing poetry.

This slideshow illustrates many of the different types of poetry taught by Kenneth Koch in Wishes, Lies, and Dreams. Miking poetry themselves is really the only way to get students to understand the power of metaphoric language--and they will begin using it in their academic writing as well. You can quickly analyze the short poems structures, and then have your students make similar poems themselves. I usually start by having students generate a poem with the whole class at the board, and then send them off in pairs or individually to create their own. Be sure to have students "publish" their poems, either on the Web or in a class magazine. They will be very proud of their work.

Poetry Forge has online (Flash) tools for generating instant poetry, as well as a downloadable version of the tools to use on the desktop. It's really fun to add some words to a list and then have the poetry-maker pop up your new poem. Students can learn a lot about metaphorical language here.
