This is a series of low-cost ($1 U.S.) podcasts about various topics in multimedia uses for teaching. The topics include narrated slideshows, telling a digital story, using smartphones, quick edit videos on the iPad, and creating multimedia ebooks. W. Fryer is the author of Playing with Media, also relatively low-cost for ebooks.

Distributed proofreaders helps public domain books become e-books by using volunteer proof-readers. While not an ESL/EFL site, this is a fascinating project that can make ebooks available for free to your students. It reminds me of the book-memorizers' work in Fahrenheit 451. Volunteer and proofread as much or as little as you like. A page a day would be great, and all work is double-checked.

A way to organize your students' eportfolios. Requires a download to create an archive.

A number of children's and young adult free books for your tablets. A good way to increase your school library with little expense. The online tool also lets your write, edit and publish books for free, and convert any doc to a book format.

Looks like a great way to self-publish your own text, or have your students create an online portfolio of their work. Directions are very simple and clear, right on the frontpage., and the tool has a full suite of editing tools.

This is a downloadable e-book free from Shelley Terrell on how to use mobile devices as learning tools.

Points out the advantages of using a tablet device for content-creation. It's fast, mobile, and economical: "We've had computers in schools for years, but in reality many (most?) classroom teachers don't and never did have their students making podcasts, movies, eBooks and websites. Doing so seems too time consuming and for many non-technical teachers the learning curve appears disproportionate to the benefits realised. "But producing comparable creative content on an iPad is relatively quick, simple, yields impressive results with minimal fuss, and the learning curve is … well, there almost isn't one! There is no need to connect an external microphone (the built-in one is better than that in any laptop), no need to adjust recording levels, no need to use a pop-filter. No need to import media from a recording device to the editing device (becasue they are one and the same), and it's unnecessary to allow 10 minutes at the end of a class, to save, unplug devices, shut down and stow the laptops. Online books for kids, read by children, with illustrations and all. Very nice read along.

A study on reading of Norewegian 10th graders on paper and on PDFs on a computer screen. The paper group had better comprehension because the paper group could spread out documents, while the PDF group had to tab back and forth while taking the quiz. Low resolution moitors also may have influenced the study. A high resolution screen would allow the reader to see all the pages of the article at a glance. This study is an interesting adjunct to my article on Reading Electronically.
