Beautiful timelines for history or social studies.

This article by R. Byrne also includes links to other educational timeline sites, including six that can be used for timeline creation by students. Very useful for content-based learning.

" Looks like this would be great with student projects. Very visually powerful and Web-capable.

This is one of the more educational timeline services and is mostly video-based. Especially appropriate for secondary students, but you will need to do some preparation to use the videos with English learners.

What does dipity do? It is a timeline maker, but you can use it to make a personal timeline of materials you create at other sites, such as Facebook, Slideshare, etc. This might be a good tool for haing students create a visual electronic portfolio. I would think you could, for instance, add an embedded Google doc or presentation, inter alia. Let the group know if you have tried this with students.

TimeToast is a way to create historical timelines. Could be used for project- or content-based learning, or for personal autobiographies. Also has several good content examples, such as Moon Landings, The Great Gatsby, and Western Civilization. You place points on the timeline and then add text and pictures to go along with the dates.

You can use photos, video (Flash or Javascript), and text to create interactive, really beautiful timelines that work in any browser. Great for student projects.

These are some good tools, some of which may be new to you. Includes Dipity, Document Suite (an authoring tool to transform documents into online help modules), Izzui to track and deliver courses, LessonWriter, Scratch from the MIT MEdia Lab for content creation, timeliners, course builders of various sorts, and a list of free podcasting, polling, and quizzing tools. Not much for mobile technology. There is a lot here to explore.

Lots of good ideas for using PowerPoint and Win MovieMaker in the classroom for student projects. Includes templates, for example, for writing story maps, timelines, and genealogy tables with PowerPoint.

A free site with study aids: mind maps, flashcards, and a goal setting/review timeline.

A large collection of ways to use Jing to teach languages, including feedback, vocabulary and grammar, timelines, using your webcam, reading, etc.

In its current closed beta form, Learnist, launched by Grockit, is still very much in its infancy, but some curious teachers have already jumped on the wagon. Time will tell whether educators will stick with Pinterest, or migrate to Learnist because of its association with Grockit, which already has a large and loyal following as a social learning tool." This is a tutorial on how to get started at Learni.st, which lets you aggregate neat things you find on the Web. You can add it to your Facebook timeline (or not), Tweet it, and use images and video, while adding a few paragraphs on how to use the "learning" you added. As with a blog, others can comment on your contributions. Like WallWisher or Pinterist, items are collected bulletin board style. This tool might be useful for professional development, and for students as a means to collect Web items for a project. If being an archivist is an important part of the new Web, this might be a helpful visual tool.

The tools are Snapguide, to create video with captions, Meograph, a timeline creator, and Thinglink which creates interactive images. These tools allow for creativity and self-expression, but also encourage students to go deeper into a subject or theme.
