  • Living in sunny Southern California, we don’t really have opportunities to make snowmen, so using a simple pre-printed sheet with the outline of a puddle and an overturned paper bowl the kids made their own melty, sunshine snowmen. They put the usual accessories on, with the exception of the sunglasses, and then wrote a sentence about where their snowman should move to or what happened to him. A lot of bang for the buck.

      K.2.3=Describe in words and pictures the changes in weather from month to month and season to season K.NS.3=Generate questions and make observations about natural processes.  This activity could be extended for special needs children by allowing them to explain to the teacher what they are thinking, and then the teacher could help the student express themselves through writing.  Kindergarteners don't know how to write very well yet, anyway, so they will probably need a lot of help and creative teachers to understand their written work.

    In this activity, students make a melting snowman out of paper, then they write about the snowman.  For example, they might say why the snowman is melting.  This activity incorporates a lot of language arts, but it also allows young children to think scientifically and notice things about their environment, such as weather and temperature.

    This is a fun game that requires students to fill a number chart (1-16) with chips by rolling three dice and using the operations (add/subtract and multiply/divide) the numbers.  They try to fill all the numbers on the chart, but no number can be covered twice, so they have to think about which operations they are going to use on the dice they roll.

      This lesson could be extended in all sorts of directions, depending on what stage the children are in their learning.  For example, you could tie the lesson into other sorts of measurement and have students estimate how much the mitten can stretch.     This is a fun lesson that connects literature to science and allows students to think about temperature in a new way.  The lesson involve measuring the temperature of the room, an empty mitten, and a mitten with a hand in it.  Most children will be surprised to find out that the mitten itself is not warm, but mittens keep your hands warm because they insulate your body temperature.

      As a child, I loved making origami, and I think origami lends itself naturally to studying geometry, so I love the idea of turning making origami into a math lesson. This is a really good whole-group activity because it allows everyone to follow along and be interested in what is going on.  It is especially nice for ELLs because by seeing you work on your box simultaneously through the projector, these students are not as restricted by the language barrier.

    The students use card stock to fold origami shapes and make a box, and they will then estimate the volume of the box.  They will test their hypotheses by counting how many marbles, etc. fit in the box after it is complete.  The lesson also incorporates identification of geometric shapes.

Extension: Students can write down the facts that equal the multiple.  For example, using multiples of 2's...students place transparent markers on multiples of 2 and write down the number sentence for each multiple. (2x1=2, 2x2=4, 2x3=6...etc)    Adaption: Students who have trouble recognizing the pattern of multiples can use a manipulative like lima beans to count out each multiple.  The student will view the problem like an addition problem (2+2=4, 2+2+2+6, etc...) eventually they will gain the understanding of the connection between addition, multiplication, and multiples.

Students who are having a hard time getting a handle on the concepts presented in this lesson could be given additional time.  Really, any adaptation you make to this activity for slower learners would be a good thing for all students, so additional pictures and resources should be shared with all students.  Time is the only thing I could think of that could become an issue for students, so slower students could be given more time and one-on-one teacher help for this activity.

    This activity uses "the cloud book" by Tomie DePaola to introduce the different types of clouds to students.  As an add on, the teacher could pull up photos of the different cloud types on the computer and show them on the overhead for students.  They should also discuss the purpose of these clouds and why there are different types.  I chose this lesson because it allows students to do a hands-on activity where they make pictures of clouds using cotton balls. This is not your average note-taking, textbook reading science lesson.

Adaptation: Teacher could split students into groups of 3-4 and have them stack liquids on their own. Students could bring in several liquids from home (all approved) and try stacking them based on the observed properties.
