For use with the Science Process standard, Prediction.  This hands on activity would be useful with ESL, and the cooperative learning style would also help with ESL,and also be easy to differentiate g/t kids by allowing them to make a video or podcast of the daily weather and thew news.  If grants can be written, this would be a good one to take a field trip to a local television station

4.3.3 Design investigations to explore how organisms meet some of their needs by responding to stimuli from their environments.4.3.4 Describe a way that a given plant or animal might adapt to a change arising from a human or non-human impact on its environment. Differentiation: Have ELL students record their biome's progress and changes using a picture graph.
  •
In this activity, students will make a mini biome in the bottom of a one liter bottle.  Students will be able to plant a seed and give it certain nutrients to watch it grow, adapt, and change to its environment.
  •
state standard: 1.3.2 Great way to keep kids interested over a long period of time. The kids are excited to see what their biome is doing/ how things are frowing. You can explain that everything the plant needs to grow is in the biome. A enrichment idea off this activity would be to try and simulate the different conditions in each biome to an enviornment that is in our world (desert vs rainforest) and see how that affects each biome.

state standard: 3.2.6 Great activity to show where the air comes from. It can be connected with earth week, or ways to help the earth. This is a great way to explain and show photosynthysis in action.

Positively Paper - 1 views

state stndard: 5.4.2 This would be a great activity to do around earth day. As finding ways to help the enviornment become more necessary, this idea of recycling paper is quite important.

state standard: 2.1.6 This game is another way to make connections with something that they have done and probably enjoy doing. An extension of this activity would be fro the kids to graph their times on a big class graph you could use different sizes of string to see what affect that might have on the swing times.

This is a great activity to talk bout simple machines and what they are. Everybody in the primary grades we enjoys the see-saw, so having an activity using a see-saw for a differentis attention getting. We can focus on key terms of this simple mahine and also use the see-saw as a weighing machine.

state standard: 2.3.1 This activity is a great activity for showing the way and which water is transported in living things. A bit of enrichment in this activity could be to talk about the nutritional aspects of these vegetables that grow from the land.

state standard: 1.1.2 Very simple and hands on activity for the first graders. The good thing about this activity is that you can use pictures with all the words. Not all first graders are able to read all the words, having pictures can be helpful for the low ability students as well as the ESL students.

state standard: 2.1.7 Doesn't the title of the activity say it all, dancing raisens. Just telling the 2nd graders about what you are planning on doing is going to grab their attention. It is also exciting for them to do activities with things that they know.

Roll a Can with Static Electricity - Science Bob - 1 views

  •
state standard: 4.1.4 This activity specifically hits an state standard. This is a really good activity because it does not take a lot of time to set up and do, and the materials are real easy to come by. This activity has extensions to it that can be used for those who may need some enrichment.

Clean Pennies with Vinegar - Science Bob - 1 views

  •
At a young age, something that they can visibly see will catch their eye. It is a simple activity that has a real world application. I would use this less as a standard teaching opportunity and more for teaching the scientific process because of the simplicity of the experiment.

Fun Science Experiments for Kids - Cool Projects & Easy Ideas for Children - 1 views

Really neat experiment for the kids to see and learn about the molecules being more spread out and moving more quickly and violently. This movement of molecules causes the balloon to expand.

1.3.4 "Describe how animals' habitats, including plants, meet their needs for food, water, shelter and an environment in which they can live."
    • Mary Jo Mack

Extension: This is a great way to open up conversation between the students and increase communication skills as they work together to determine what they need in their habitat in order for their living organisms to survive. This could also be a fun language arts cross-curricular activity- students could answer the question "What would your shoebox habitat look like?"
  •
First graders love to create stories. Their especially imaginative brains are always coming up with plots and characters for even the simplest of things. This knack for creative story building is something that can help your child in any subject. In first grade, part of your child's science unit will be learning about the characteristics of different habitats. He'll discuss geography, learn about different kinds of environments, and talk about what kinds of animals live where. By creating a shoebox habitat with your child, you will expand on what he is learning in school and allow him to put those budding creative instincts to good use!

3.4.2 "Define the uses and types of simple machines and utilize simple machines in the solution to a ―real world problem."
    • Mary Jo Mack

Extension: Our water needs to be clean for so many reasons- not just taking a bath! Students could brainstorm in groups reasons why we need clean, filtered water (i.e. cooking, cleaning, etc.)  Extension: Social Studies- What an eye opening experience it could be for students to learn about third world countries and how lucky we are to not have to worry about having clean water to clean, cook, and bathe with.
  •
In the book Dirt Boy, Fister Farnello loved dirt so much that he ate it, played in it and refused get rid of it. He finally takes a bath. Children will design, build a water filter and use it to clean muddy water.

6.4.1 "Understand how to apply potential or kinetic energy to power a simple device"
    • Mary Jo Mack

This activity could be differentiated for gifted students by challenging them to use materials they can find around the classroom other than those provided once they have determined how to successfully build the wheel and axle devices out of the provided materials.
  •
Children will use and describe processes of science and design technology to build and test simple wheel and axle devices made of disposable cups.

6.4.2. "Construct a simple device that uses potential or kinetic energy to perform work"
    • Mary Jo Mack

This is a great activity that takes this standard to a whole new level- using the body to make a model of a machine.  Once the students have completed the activity, I would challenge them to think of what we use in our every day life that is made out of machines like the "marshmallow-smashing machine." Sixth grade students will love coming up with silly noises and motions- awesome learning tool/visual for kinesthetic students!
  •
Children are formed into groups to 'invent' a pretend machine that smashes marshmallows. Each child plays the role of a cog or part of the machine to move the marshmallow along. Children then read the story Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel, a machine that digs its way to a happy ending, and recognize how technological devices affect our lives.

BrainPOP Jr. | Seasons | Lesson Ideas - 1 views

K.2.3 "Describe in words and pictures the changes in weather from month to month and season to season."  This activity can be adjusted for ELL students by allowing them to use only pictures for recording their observations. If the students are feeling somewhat comfortable with the new language, they can be paired with English speaking students to work together to spell and sound out words for their notebooks. This activity can be modified for older age groups by having the students make predictions about what is going to happen with the weather conditions. These students can also make predictions about why they think the seasons change.
  •
Students can participate in this long-term activity by observing and recording the weather each week of the school term, or the school year. The students can do various activities within this long-term activity, such as measuring the amount of rain or snow, recording weather conditions, making observations in a notebook, etc. This is a great way to observe and learn the seasons!

Learn the Layers: Become a Dirt Expert | Education.com - 1 views

I have changed this to a 3rd grade activity. 3.2.4 Identify fossils and describe how they provide evidence about the plants and animals that lived long ago and the nature of their environment at that time.
    • Jessica Buell

Adaptions: you can adapt this lesson by having ELL and special need students explore in the dirt and sketch what they find in each layer and what layer they found it in making it into a "Dirt Journal" They will learn a lot just by exploring in the dirt and talking wtih friends about what they find. Extensions: You can extend this activity to older students by creating "dig sites" for each student to dig and identify the different layers. They can futher research types of rocks they find and identify what type of rock it is.
