While this game doesn't have word problems itself, the skills used in the game are the same skills needed to solve multi-step word problems.
  • Creativity is the key!
  •
A great game for working on operations, mental math, and/or PEMDAS.

In order to assess this activity the teacher could request that certain shapes be used and then ask the student to point them out.  i.e. "Where is your hexagon?"
  •
A creative activity that requires children to draw geometric shapes.

This activity can be adjusted to different number patterns. Instead of counting by 10's you could count by any number such as by 5's or 3's. For the ELLs in your classroom you could use cereals from their home countries so they would have a home connection to the classroom. You could also turn this activity into a patterning one where the students create patterns based on cereal type and/or colors.
  •
Students use rainbow-colored "o" cereal to create a necklace that counts by 10 to 100.

This could also be used as an addition or subtraction domino game in lower grades without changing the integrity of the game. It would also be easy to use as the level of difficulty of your problems increase. Laminating them to different colors would allow easy coding as to the level of difficulty of the problem.

Interpret a multiplication equation as a comparison, e.g., interpret 35 = 5 × 7 as a statement that 35 is 5 times as many as 7 and 7 times as many as 5. Represent verbal statements of multiplicative comparisons as multiplication equations"

Lesson Plans: "School Shape Scavenger Hunt" (Elementary, Mathematics) - 2 views

    • Jean Guernsey

I would read a book about shapes first as part of the discussion on shapes. I like in the end when the students come back and tally their results. You could also do a bar graph with the tally marks.

These activities can be used as sensory counting activities for special needs students.

It's no secret that children absolutely love marshmallows. It's also not a secret that children don't always love math. But put the two things together and you've got some fun activities that will get your child excited about math basics like estimation, measurement, area, and counting. He'll have so much fun, he won't even know he's doing math! Here some ideas for marshmallow math games you can play with your kindergartner.

2.OA.2 Second grade game that can be utilized in small groups or independently.  Because there is a "challenge", it allows students who work faster to continue to look for new solutions.  This would be a great "I'm already finished!" activity!

Allow students to work independently or in small groups.  Provide legos and base plates for student use.  Differentiation may include the chance to design the entire room, or just the toy box.  Students would have an opportunity to visually present, or just set up the model.
  •
I plan to allow the students to design and build their toy boxes to scale.  I would model using legos (and legos could be provided to them for use as well.)  They would have an opportunity to layout the entire bedroom (to scale.)

Fun activity for fourth grade!  Kids love to think of real life solutions.  Who knows?  Maybe they COULD design a real garden for the school!  Advanced students could ponder the logistics of HOW to actually make this happen and students needing additional assistance could work in small groups or with the teacher.

Make a Geo Board | Education.com - 1 views

This is a great activity that could be used as early as grade K. This can really help young students grasp a full awareness of shapes and how they are formed.
  •
I could not hammer that many nails without getting frustrated. To me, it's worth it to buy geobards because it's hard to get the spacing perfect and keep the nails straight and not have them pop out.
  •
Using a geoboard is fun, but making one from scratch is frustrating! I cannot hammer that many nails in and keep them straight and evenly spaced. It is definitely worth it to me to BUY geoboards instead of trying to make my own.

CCS: 3.NF.1 Really fun and active way to make learnin fun. By allowing them to shoot paper wods into the trash can, chart the makes and misses, and then compute the data into fractions, we can get them interested and engaged in a topic that can be intimidating to some kids.

CCS: 6.EE.2 What I love about this game is that it explains the magc trick. Once you ahve them follow the instructions and they all get the answer that you told them they would get them hooked. Everyone always wants to know how you did that, and by explaining the steps you can introduce them to variables in a fun and captivating way.
