      This activity can be adjusted for different ranges of ability. Students who have a good understanding of patterning could pair up with eachother and try to challenge one another into figuring out their patterns. You could also use different manipulatives instead of money, for instance for the students who are less adapt at patterning you may use cubes of different colors and then they could see the pattern easier. For ELL students you could use money from their home country that they may recognize.

      This game can be differentiated by grouping students (7 cards, six cards, five cards) and they can earn a certificate when they demonstrate they are ready to move up to a new group.  This is a great way to reinforce skills and also assess students' progress.

      For differentiated learning, have sections of students competing.  Some could compete at the seven card level, others at six, and others at five.  As they "pass" each level, they earn a certificate entitling them to compete at the next level.  Great way to improve skills and assess progress!

On long strips of paper I made place value charts, making sure the commas were in place and writing the words (ones, tens, hundreds, etc.) under the blank line where a number will be placed. Laminate. With a partner and a deck of cards the children shuffle the deck and then pass out the predetermined number of cards according to how far you want them to learn place value. Hundred thousands would be 6 cards, millions 7 cards, 10 millions 8 cards, etc. Cards are face down in a pile. Face cards equal 1, aces are 0, and everything else what they say. They are trying to make the largest number possible to win (or smallest). Both players turn over a card at the same time and decide where to place it. Once placed it must stay there....

    This is a GREAT game idea to reinforce place value.  FANTASTIC!  Kids love games. Easy and inexpensive to make.  You need paper (laminate finished product) and decks of cards.  Can be independent learning, homework, or station time with students.

  • Addition with 3-digit numbers has never been so fun! This activity uses a deck of cards to create addition problems and figure out sums. Start out playing with your child, and gradually allow him to solve problems more independently. You'll see his confidence with adding improve as he practices in a more engaging way.       Adaptations: This game can also be a subtraction game for gifted students.  ELL students will learn about science through looking at the pictures on the cards of different species of butterflies.  Special Ed students can play this game in pairs or small groups to help them with addition/subtraction. Extension: Use "The Natural World - playing card collection" to connect math with science. (i.e. butterflies of the world) This deck contains pictures of butterflies with the card numbers.

      While this activity does not cover a specific standard it does meet the requirement of teaching the design process.  Make sure that students must design, test, and revise their design to make the activity authentic.  A race would be a great final activity.  Assessment could come from an oral presentation on what they did and why or a visual presentation, such as a poster.
