Guess the younger generation would rather pay market rates for drinks than associate with old Elks.

Every Week at work we have "Thirsty Thursday" which usually takes place at the local Irish Pub called something like "Local Irish Pub" and we get our drinks and munchies. Usually three to four people show up, have a drink and head home. This week, someone brought up their distaste for the prices at the Irish Pub and that he knows of a place where the drinks are half price. "It's great" he says "It's called The Elk and the drinks are wicked affordable".

Just as I predicted, these boys got the gift of a lifetime. .. our 100 yr old crown jewel 'the elks Home' for a song. Borrowed the money to pay the 4.5 million selling price (appraised value $15mm) and two years later get advanced $10mm more!!. I guarantee they won't be putting all that money in the Home but mostly in their back pockets. This article points out some crucial misinformation from GL. "We could never break even as the most residents we could have is 120", well these former consultants to the Elks Home knew better. They are at 185!!. Break even was well below that!! Tragic, sad and totally unnecessary.

Just as I expected. I wonder who these investors might be? Hope no one from GL? That 4.5 million sale price looks awfully cheap now.

Wal-Mart recently offered to buy the Tacoma Elks' property at S. 23rd Streets and Union, but the organization turned down the retail giant's bid. "Wal-Mart was one of the bidders -- but I won't take that one," Gary Gaimbrone said Wednesday. Gaimbrone is the Tacoma Elks' special representative and is in charge of the lodge, including the property's sale. Gaimbrone said Wal-Mart's bid was close in price to the one he plans on presenting to the membership. "The problem with Wal-Mart is that they have too long of a contingency period," Gaimbrone said, adding that he was concerned the company would come back with a lower bid during that time period.

The Thousand Oaks Elks Lodge will host an open house in conjunction with a motorcycle show from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sat., Aug. 22 at the lodge, 158 Conejo School Road, Thousand Oaks. The lodge will be open for facility tours. Officers will be available to answer questions about the organization. The weekly Elks charity barbecue will be available at prices starting at $6. The dinners were featured in 805 magazine as one of the best in Ventura County.

It's no wonder the elks have lost so many members in Ca. These lodges are pricing the dues to cover the cost of running their facilities. In years past the elks were noted for "None but the best, rich or poor". Well, the poor, those uninterested in the lodge facilities or on fixed incomes are not going to join the Elks. There are plenty of organizations around that one can do good with and NOT subsidize someone elses playground.
