"Tiffin Elks Lodge 94 is celebrating 127 years in Tiffin. Exalted Ruler Joe Steinmetz, who joined the lodge seven years ago, is helping plan the event with other members. Why celebrate 127 years? "We want to commemorate 127 years of benevolence in Tiffin and celebrate another 100 years of active involvement in our community," Steinmetz said. Friday, dinner and live entertainment will take place for members and guests. Events Saturday are open to the public at 106 E. Perry St. Indoor and outdoor activities are to continue all day Saturday, with proceeds to benefit Disabled American Veterans. At 8 a.m., registration opens for a 5K run or 1K walk. An opening ceremony is at 9:30 a.m. and the race steps off at 10 a.m., following a route along Riverside Drive and downtown Tiffin. Registration for the 5K and 1K can be done up to the day of the race at $15 per person. The age groups are: 12 and under; 13-19; 20-34; 35-50; and over 50. Forms can be obtained at the Elks, Clover Club, Madison Street Tavern, Varsity Barber Shop, Champs Barber Shop, Pit Stop, Reino's and Ace Hardware. Checks should be made payable to Tiffin Elks Lodge 94. A grill and beverage bar opens at noon to serve all day. A mini-golf challenge and cornhole tournament are to begin at 1 p.m. in the parking lot. The cost is $20 per team for the cornhole tournament. Next, 8-11 p.m. is the "rooty music" of Dragon Wagon, with a mix of bluegrass, rock and folk. Steinmetz said the Elks National Foundation issues grants to qualifying lodges to meet community needs. Steinmetz said the Elks have partnered with organizations such as Winterfest and Tiffin-Seneca Heritage Festival and are looking for grant opportunities for both events this year. good news that something is being preserved from McCook. The bad news is that it lost it's charter. This was one hell of a lodge in it's day. The fact is that the GL is mostly responsible for the demise of this lodge and the dramatic loss of membership. nebraska is down 77% from 1985. and that was as of 2014. Down to 7,000 from 32,000. HUGE drop that can only be attributed to leadership (or lack of).

"RAHWAY-The Rahway Elks Lodge #1075 is sponsoring a murder mystery dinner theater event on Saturday, March 6. This event will take place at the Lodge Hall, which is located at 122 West Milton Avenue in Rahway. The plot has been set: "Murder in Paradise" transforms those in attendance into cruise ship passengers, anchored off the little island of "Nogo Pogo". But all is not well in paradise, as the island music is interrupted by murder! It will be up to the clever passengers to help solve the murder and make it back to the ship."

MARTINS FERRY - Perhaps it's the fact that James L. Nichelson is the oldest of 10 children. Or maybe it is his education, military or law experience that make him what he is today. Whatever the cause, this Martins Ferry resident's unique abilities will soon be realized by a national audience. On July 9 in Portland, Ore., Nichelson, 61, will be installed as the Grand Exalted Ruler - national president - for the Protective Order of the Elks. He is the first Ohio resident to be named to the post in 38 years.

Losing $73,000 is a lot so that is obviously a concern. Still, sometimes these 'special representatives' are not very people friendly. I've know a few who seem to get these high autocratic positions in the Elks and they abuse their power. Let's hope that is not the case either.

The summer golf calendar is filled with a myriad of benefit tournaments, but only a handful encompass such a worthy cause as the Arizona Elks Association Social Welfare Clothe-a-Child event. All the proceeds are used to purchase clothing for needy and disadvantaged children. "This is a statewide program, some of our clubs do it (donate clothes) at Christmas and some before the first day of school," said tournament chairman Becky Waer. "We do it through the schools, so it is kind of a confidential thing."

Wal-Mart recently offered to buy the Tacoma Elks' property at S. 23rd Streets and Union, but the organization turned down the retail giant's bid. "Wal-Mart was one of the bidders -- but I won't take that one," Gary Gaimbrone said Wednesday. Gaimbrone is the Tacoma Elks' special representative and is in charge of the lodge, including the property's sale. Gaimbrone said Wal-Mart's bid was close in price to the one he plans on presenting to the membership. "The problem with Wal-Mart is that they have too long of a contingency period," Gaimbrone said, adding that he was concerned the company would come back with a lower bid during that time period.

This year marks the 51st anniversary of the Elks Lodge in Morden. Morden Elks Lodge is a fraternal organization that raises funds to support local community and children's needs along with supporting the Elks of Canada Purple Cross Fund. This fund is accessible locally to help out children in need of medical care where additional funding is required. While most fraternal organizations are struggling to find new members, the Morden Elks are fortunate to have had a large number of young men - 28 in total - join the organization in the past few years.

"Local hunters have the opportunity to stretch out a helping hand to veterans in need. The Elks have begun the annual collection of deer, elk and other animal hides which will be tanned and distributed for recreational and occupational therapy throughout the Veterans Administration health-care system to OUR Disabled Veterans'. The Elks also have a program in place where tanned leather is cut and sewn into specially designed fingerless gloves, which are furnished to Veterans confined to wheelchairs to protect their hands during movement. The drive is part of a nationwide leather program that the Elks have been operating since 1948. The motto of the Elks National Veterans Service Commission is: "So long as there are Veterans, the benevolent and protective order of Elks will never forget them.""

The USS New York -- the Navy's newest amphibious assault ship -- is special in that its bow is forged with 7.5 tons of steel salvaged from the Twin Towers. Having arrived in Manhattan on Monday, the ship is being formally commissioned today."

Hard to believe how well this former Elks lodge is doing. GL really screwed up to lose this one.

Losing this lodge is a tremendous loss for the Elks and gives the Order quite a public black eye. Hopefully the remaining members of the Austin lodge can keep the facility. Even if they do win in court though it will be quite a struggle to regain the former membership, become financially stable and remain a viable non-profit for the long term. They will need it.} It is more than likely that they have struggled, they haven't given up, and in my opinion have shown all of us what a determined membership can accomplish. Kudos to former Austin lodge, now The High Road on Dawson.

Now why would the leadership of any lodge sell their building without requesting permission from GL? And this is a lodge that is 115 years old? SMH If true, that's just a perfect illustration how far this organization has fallen. We do not seem to be attracting people with business and administration abilities or if we do then they are not willing to take on leadership responsibilities.

I'm sure chicago is an endless money pit. Need to have a program to move homeless vets out of that corrupt hell hole of a town. They could have done it if they haven't had given away the Elks home for a song. there was 200 acres and it is just so very hard to believe that this crown jewel of elkdom couldn't have been utilized for veterans.

Interesting article and yes.. the fear of DUI's have contributed significantly to the reduction of participation among members. No question about that. Here in NC, it is not uncommon for Law Enforcement spokespersons to warn motorists not to have even ONE drink. Between click it and ticket and don't drink and drive campaigns these questionable tactics average one campaign every 6 weeks or so. So it is no wonder most folks just stay the heck home.

So much BS. There was no need to sell the Home. A tragedy of epic proportions for the Elks. It is not a crown Jewell- it is the heart and soul of Elkdom and the epitome of our cardinal principles in action for a hundred years.

I have to agree that gambling is not the best way to raise funds. However, our own lodge offers bingo and that is certainly gambling though legal.

Apparently there is some controversy going on in Canada. They appear to be trying to merge the Elks of Canada (men) with the Royal Purple (women) since it has been 15 years since women were allowed into the Elks of Canada. If you go to their website, that 'merger' is apparently not going on very well. Canadian Elks number 12,000, ladies 3000. About 250 locations/lodges
