Video: Common Core State Standards - Elementary School - 0 views

  •
Two schools TMS has worked with were profiled by the Teaching Channel in this video that unpacks the Common Core Standards for elementary schools. Funny that they mention "technology" being integrated throughout the standards, but their example is of teachers watching videos of each other. I happen to know that both schools are doing much more sophisticated work that blends digital media into students' ELA and Math units, but it's not yet on the radar of CCSS evaluators (at least at the time this video was made).

I am intrigued by this idea, but worried that it will lead to a focus on math procedures over conceptual understanding. I think the latter is possible, just harder. Does anyone know if this is actually a school or if any schools are doing this? The article just refers to a summer school experiment.

Classrooms for the Future - 0 views

  • The vertical axis on the left is Complexity, with explicit reference to rigor or new Bloom’s taxonomy from basic on the bottom to higher order at the top.  The horizontal axis is Instruction from teacher centered or didactic instruction to student centered or constructivist instruction.  The diagonal axis ranges from more abstract, artificial activities to authentic, real world or relevant activities.
  • The goal of CFF is to create more learning opportunities that are where the three axes meet in the upper right hand corner of the chart.
  • To make these changes, teachers and school leaders participate in extensive professional development on how to best harness the power of technology to increase student achievement and ensure students are ready for college and the high-tech global job market.

The school that gives every student an iPad | News | TechRadar UK - 0 views

  • The iPad project arose from day-to-day demands within the school. As Head of Computing, a dozen iMacs were fixed in Fraser's classroom, and a dozen MacBooks were available for booking; but with teachers increasingly wanting to provide pupils with web access, pressure and demand grew.
  • Apple's tablet dealt with every problem the school had with the iPod touch: it boasted a decent software keyboard and projector connection, and Apple made office apps available for sale. On importing his own iPad from the US, Fraser was sold: "On the first day, it ran and ran. I couldn't make the battery die, and I realised this alone would transform the technology experience in the classroom."

As schools become more interested in using these tools, I find it useful to have examples and templates.

Teacher Development: Fueling Teachers to Go High-Tech | Edutopia - 0 views

  •
"Forest Lake principal Kappy Cannon didn't leave it up to teachers to decide whether they would join the digital revolution. As long as you provide adequate support, she reasons, you can demand that it be done. This mandate from the boss gave the school's tech-integration team a major boost. Also helpful: instructional-technology specialist Paulette Williams's sweet but insistent approach. When the school got interactive whiteboards, she gave teachers six months to relinquish their old overhead projectors. Then she said, "You can give me the projectors peacefully, or I'm going to take them." "

Tell, Don't Ask - love it! I strongly believe buy in from the leadership team AND mandating implementation is key to change in a school.

Generation YES » GenYES - 1 views

GenYES is the only student-centered research-based solution for school-wide technology integration. Students work with teachers to design technology-infused lessons and provide tech support. The resulting collaboration provides the students with project-based learning and the teachers with on-site, sustainable technology integration support.
  •
I supervised the implementation of the GenYES program for three middle schools when I was working in the Schenectady CIty School District. The students really liked supporting teachers and some teachers really bought into the program. I believe it is a valuable collaborative program but sustainability, especially if it is grant funded, can be problematic because of the yearly licensing fees. It's been three years since I worked with Dennis Hooper and the program and the fee schedule be have changed. I know they were doing more online lessons, training, etc. I can provide more information to anyone who is interested.
