Lawyer assesses Pinterest's copyright situation - 0 views

  •
"Pinterest's members are solely responsible for what they pin and repin. They must have explicit permission from the owner to post everything." What's more, Pinterest places all blame and potential legal fees on its users. It writes: "You agree to defend, indemnify, and hold Cold Brew Labs, its officers, directors, employees and agents, harmless from and against any claims, liabilities, damages, losses, and expenses, including, without limitation, reasonable legal and accounting fees, arising out of or in any way connected with (i) your access to or use of the Site, Application, Services or Site Content, (ii) your Member Content, or (iii) your violation of these Terms." Basically, if a photographer sues you for pinning an image illegally on Pinterest, the user must not only pay for his or her lawyer, they must also pay for Pinterest's lawyer. In addition, the defendant must pay all charges against him or herself, along with all of Pinterest's charges. Kirsten likens Pinterest to Napster as an enabler of illegal activity. It wasn't just Napster that went down -- 12 year old girls who downloaded music were sued too. Read more: http://www.businessinsider.com/pinterest-copyright-issues-lawyer-2012-2#ixzz1nsmeSGHc

Education Week: It's Time for a New Kind of High School - 0 views

  • withholds responsibility from, students.
  • We have lost sight of young people's potential for responsibility, and it can be argued that in doing so we have sacrificed many opportunities for growth and usefulness.
  • Students see themselves as passive participants
  • ...3 more annotations...
  • he steady drone of teachers' voices in room after room. The sound of boredom is deafening.
  • We need to tear apart the school day, the high school timetable, the school year, the four-year diploma.
  • The time has come to stop tinkering with an antiquated model. We are delayed in our thinking because those who were able to suffer through or even thrive in this dying high school model have grown up to be teachers and lawyers and businesspeople who now advocate for reforms through the prism of their experiences.

Facebook, like many communication services and social media sites, uses its Terms of Service (ToS) to forbid children under the age of 13 from creating an account. Such prohibitions are not uncommon in response to the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), which seeks to empower parents by requiring commercial Web site operators to obtain parental consent before collecting data from children under 13.

"At Google, we support the education of families on how to stay safe online. That's why we've teamed up with online safety organization iKeepSafe to develop curriculum that educators can use in the classroom to teach what it means to be a responsible online citizen. The curriculum is designed to be interactive, discussion filled and allow students to learn through hands-on and scenario activities. On this site you'll find a resource booklet for both educators and students that can be downloaded in PDF form, presentations to accompany the lesson and animated videos to help frame the conversation. OMG: Engaging Students on Their Own Terms -- THE Journal - 0 views

  •
"The Challenge My challenge to teachers is to create assignments, projects and techniques to capture your students' attention. Projects should be technology-rich, highly engaging, and fun learning experiences that reflect real-world skills. How will you know if the exercise reached your students? One indicator of success will be how your students respond to their parents' typical daily question: "What did you do in school today?" Will they get the usual response ("Nothing")? Or will they hear something new, maybe something along the lines of, "OMG, I can't believe what we got to do today?""

NetSmartz 5: Digital Cheating - 1 views

  •
""In this age of copy-and-paste, digital cheating needs to be addressed on two fronts. First, we need to educate our students at an early age to respect and cite the work of others. Second, if all we ask is for our kids to regurgitate information, then we miss the mark. It is our responsibility as educators to craft assignments that require critical thinking, evaluation, and creation.""

Interesting if perhaps a bit naive when it comes to using cell phones to access outside internet providers. How on Earth would you monitor this. I know that that isn't the point, there is a certain expectation and students need to live up to it.
