Free and almost free ideas for art and culture lovers visiting Washington, DC

Wordpress is a free and open-source software package originally designed for blogs but is also now used for websites, forums, and social networks. It lets programmers make plugins and themes and lets them distribute them for free or for pay. After reading through their documentation and examples in high school, I've used it to create several websites for clients -- free to me, and I can charge for my labor. Over the years it's gotten easy enough for almost anyone to put together with some effort and patience. It's putting the power of next-level internet content production into the hands of everyone, and it's getting easier every year.

Thingiverse is a repository of 3D models, usually intended for 3D printing, that are completely free to download and print if you have a 3D printer. In daily life, if you don't know how to 3D model but need a household object like a door hook, you can search "door hook" and 3D print it out instead of buying one. Any 3D designer or artist can upload their file for everyone to access.

Hospitality House takes great pride in its Arts Program. It is the only free-of-charge fine arts studio for homeless and poor artists in San Francisco. The Willamette Valley Music Festival is an exciting annual event held on the UO campus during the ASUO Spring Street Faire. Wampire After forming Wampire, Rocky Tinder and Eric Phipps steadily began to make a name for themselves in the same Portland, OR, scene that has produced labelmates STRFKR as well as Unknown Mortal Orchestra. It makes sense, then, that Wampire came to Polyvinyl's attention when the duo opened for STRFKR at a hometown Portland show and that UMO's bassist Jacob Portrait produced Wampire's debut full-length, Curiosity.

The Metropolitan Choral Festival will focus on bringing to the diverse residents of the Denver metropolitan area an annual free concert of major choral works. Each concert will be presented by area volunteer, non-auditioned singers joined by some of the area's finest professional musicians and vocal soloists.

Oh also, a note on booking shows -- for the best chance of a successful booking, it's best to have a show already lined up, so like 3-4 bands who are ready to play. It's also best to plan it at least a month in advance. Shows can be done on shorter notice, but there's a much better chance if there aren't many shows planned in the month you want your event to be.

The Oregon Voice is the best completely student-run magazine on campus because it is the only completely student-run magazine on campus. We get to print what we want and that's what makes it cool. We're always looking for contributors of writing or art, so if you'd like to get involved, feel free to apply!
