Should the U.S. lower its drinking age? - 3 views

  •
This article addresses a current contingent issue about lowering the drinking age and also has a short video to go along with it. Let me know what you think, be responsive.
  •
This was a very thought-provoking article along with the video! I think it would be super interesting for someone to do a study on whether making the drinking age as low as 6, and having their parents give their kids small amounts of alcohol at dinnertime, would have an effect on how they abuse/don't abuse alcohol in their future teenage years.
  •
I think this is a huge contingent issue because of the fact that most people do drink before the age of 21. It addresses the need for moderation when consuming alcohol. In my personal opinion is, if you can buy and house and go fight for your country you should also be able to have a beer once in awhile without it being considered underage drinking.

Making Better PowerPoint Presentations - 0 views

  •
For my segment four project, I am creating a powerpoint presentation. This presentation is intended for me being the teacher and the audience being high school students, as I am educating them about the Amish lifestyle. This source is more specific for teachers and talks about what students like or dislike about teacher's powerpoints. Although directed to teachers, it would be helpful to anyone making a powerpoint.

Rhetoric in an Ad - 1 views

  •
This image is rhetorical because it is obviously planned and adapted to an audience. It reveals human motives to be more environmentally aware of the actions taken with usage of water. It addresses the contingent issue of how citizens treat the environment and how we are wasteful with certain resources. This ad appeals to pathos because it directly shows how it affects fish and other creatures who live in the water we mistreat. Also, it is kairotic because this ad came out around the same time as the BP oil spill. It can be used to support the fact that, many times, we don't treat water respectfully and not only does it affect our lives, it affects the animals' lives as well.

Washington Redskin Name Controversy - 1 views

  •
The Washington Redskin team name and whether it should be changed has been a contingent issue for many years. Some Native Americans argue it is offensive and does not honor their people.
  •
This is definitely a contingent issue and it will be interesting to see if they change their name.

2006 Jif Commercial - 1 views

shared by mittelbm on 06 Oct 14 - No Cached
  •
Please tell me you remember this commercial?! Jif peanut butter has situated ethos because it is already well known. With the slogan "Choosey mom's choose Jif", they use an enthymeme assuming that ordinary mom[s that don't care as much would choose peanut butter that wasn't as good. The rhetor also uses pathos by showing two cute little boys sharing thier favorite snack, tugging on the audience's emotions.
  •
I agree with everything present in the commercial. I think the rhetor of this commercial is trying to show the importance of pathos in advertising. Jif peanut butter is clearly trying to appeal to normal middle class families with young kids. I think this ad is effective because it shows people that normal families just like them use Jif, almost like a social norm in society.
  •
Brennan -- yes, the slogan is an enthymeme, but the implied assumption is that being a choosey mom = being a good mom :)

A crash course in collegiate dressing - 0 views

  •
This article is interesting because, while it is an article from a newspaper produced right on campus, it is a different type of source than we usually look for while researching our topics. Instead of searching for national newspapers or articles from academic journals, finding smaller publications can be useful in research. This local perspective on subcultures talks about how dressing a certain way can signal what kind of culture you are from. I believe while we are all mid-research on our topics, we know our subcultures have a certain uniform they can be identified with.

The World's First Genetically Modified Babies Will Graduate High School This Year - 2 views

  •
I stumbled upon this article on Yahoo and clicked on it because the title intrigued me. I believe this article is rhetorical because it is planned. The word choice is thought out and the topic is explained to those who are previously uninformed. It is responsive and evident by the slew of comments further down the page. Also, the article address the contingent issue of whether genetically alter babies is ethical. This piece shapes knowledge because I learned facts I didn't know about, as well as I'm sure other people learned.
  •
Weird, definitely a contingent issue though. If people found out you were a genetically modified person, you would probably be labeled a freak.
  •
This was interesting to read about. Definitely a rhetorical article!

Why Quit Smoking - American Lung Association - 0 views

shared by mittelbm on 29 Sep 14 - No Cached
  •
I believe that this is rhetorical writing. With smokers being the primary audience, it seeks to persuade them to quit by informing them of all the reasons why they should stop. This article also states facts, builds community for smokers aiming to quit, etc.

I got "baby goth" and was very confused on each question because I never had a answer that fit the question. I guess I'm not in sync with the goth culture of today.

Are Hipsters Really Hipsters? - 1 views

  •
I found this article pretty funny and pretty accurate. The term "hipster" relates to being ahead of the trends or bringing back vintage trends. But this article (and especially the pictures/graphics) calls out "hipsters" and mocks the group for conforming to each other and all acting, dressing, talking the same, as well as having the same interests.

Nice tips! Might have to send this to my mom so she can try mixing up some of these cleaning concoctions at home!

What the heck! Dust with dryer sheets? I think my approach to cleaning is going to be different, now. Thanks for the tips and the insight into those whose lives are much much cleaner than mine!! :)

I'm sharing #3 (the car fresheners stuck into a fan) with a friend that lives in my dorm. She said since day one her room has always smelt musty, so maybe this will do the trick. These were really interesting to read through :)
