The Future of Search: Social Relevancy Rank - 0 views

  • Real-time Web search (of streams of activities) is a hot topic right now.
  • Solution 101: Rank by Friends and People You Follow
  • Here is an idea so obvious that it is surprising Twitter has not implemented it already: front-load search results with people you follow.
  • ...10 more annotations...
  • This is not possible on Twitter today, but it already works great on FriendFeed.
  • Small Worlds and Taste Neighbors
  • As a next step, search results could rank people you may not be directly following but who are being followed by people you follow.
  • The Influencers and the Crowd
  • someone who is followed by hundreds of thousands of users is likely more relevant to you than someone you don't know at all.
  • Using number of followers as a weight might be a good way to order the rest of the activity stream.

      ????
  • The Quest for the Perfect Filter
  • Social Relevancy Rank will evolve over time to help us make sense of endless streams of activity. This ranking will have a profound impact on how we tap into our friends' opinions.
  • And now, as always, please tell us what you think? What would you expect from a search engine with Social Relevancy Rank built in?
  •
FriendFeed has recently launched a search feature, and so Facebook search must be coming soon. Real-time Web search (of streams of activities) is a hot topic right now. Everyone, including Google and Microsoft, recognizes the value of using trusted contacts as filters. What was once called social search is now called real-time search, but this time it will really happen. First, it will be applied to streams and then to the Web in general. What we are about to get is a Social Relevancy Rank. Whenever you search streams of activity, the results will be ordered not chronologically but by how relevant each is to you based on your social graph. That is, people who matter more to you will bubble up. How does this work? Well, there will be a formula, just as there is a formula for Page Rank.

Technology Behind Xbox 360 Project Natal - 0 views

  •
Much has been said about Microsoft's Project Natal since its announcement in the 2009 Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) last June 1. "Natal" was used as the code name of the project because natal means birth and Microsoft considers the latest Xbox 360 video game device as the next generation home entertainment system. It utilizes a motion sensor device that will eliminate the need for a traditional controller and lets the gamer use his full body to interact with the device while gaming.

Wuala - The social online storage - 0 views

Some notes from a Mac OS X perspective: http://www.wuala.com/grahamperrin/public/2009/04/11/wuala.png for a screen shot of Wuala beta (133) on Mac OS X. http://www.wuala.com/grahamperrin/public/2009/04/11/wuala-nfs-finder.png for a Finder view of things; Wuala is presented as a volume. http://www.wuala.com/grahamperrin/public/2009/04/11/wuala-contextual.png shows a contextual menu for a PNG in Wuala. When I realised how well things are integrated, my jaw dropped. I was truly amazed. Uses of Java, NFS etc. seem to be excellent. I could wish for: * Wuala service to support extended attributes * the Wuala application to be more refined * an easier way to share/publish thumbnails of images - but these things are not show-stoppers. Summary: best in class! A winner!

What Your Gadget Really Costs: Consumer Electronics Teardowns - BusinessWeek - 2 views

  •
The cost to make an iPod, Xbox, and other electronics has big bottom-line implications at Apple, Microsoft, and their peers. Some companies are willing to swallow losses on some gadgets-for instance, gaming consoles-in hopes that they'll make up the difference, and then some, on sales of related gear, such as video game software. Other companies, including Apple, are able to sell many products for a healthy profit from the get-go.

co-ment - web-based text annotation - 8 views

  • co-ment : Web-based text annotation
  • write or upload your own texts, submit them for comments and process the comments
  • source code for the full functionality of the co-ment service is distributed as free software
  • ...6 more annotations...
  • upload any document (MSWord, RTF, OpenOffice Document)
    • Graham Perrin

It is only the new version (to be deployed in the coming weeks, most likely in January 2010) that markdown is the pivot format and you will be able to use the "latex to markdown" conversion of pandoc to upload texts. With the present version, the best solution is either: - Through OpenDocument and upload, which is a pain when you start from lyx, as lyx to OpenDocument does not work well. - By generating HTML from lyx, displaying it in a browser, creating a new text in co-ment (http://www.co-ment.net/text/add/) and cutting and pasting from the browser to the edition window in co-ment. This is ugly as a method but works well if you don't have images.
  • or write it directly with your browser
  • work privately on your text with a few chosen collaborators
  • or open the commenting process to the public
  • use comments to improve your document and create new versions of your text
  • export your text (and all comments) in any format (MS Word, OpenOffice Document, etc.)

Google Code Blog: Introducing the Google Font API & Google Font Directory - 0 views

  •
Yesterday, Google unveiled its new SEO friendly font API. The API is supported by the four major browsers (Safari, FireFox, Chrome, and IE6 and above), and allows many new fonts to be displayed within web pages in a manner that relies on plain text instead of images, flash, or Javascript. A good start to something with potential.

ArtisanCam - Activities - Picture Book Maker - 3 views

  •
from NCS-Tech Picture Book Maker is a super-simple, super-flexible, super-easy tool for creating … picture books! The interface is intuitive, it loads fast, and there are many, many different story elements that can be brought into each book. It would probably help for a teacher (and students!) to go through the tool in advance to see what elements they want to include, to make sure they have what they need. From there, simple storyboarding in advance should be all that's needed to develop a high quality, PRINTABLE, finished book!
