Tagul » Tag Clouds - 9 views

  •
"Wordle was designed to be just a toy. Wordle clouds cannot be used as in the way tag clouds are usually used, like being embedded on a web page and serving as navigation units. That leaves the niche that Tagul is intended to fulfil. Tagul clouds are not toys and designed to be used on blogs, web pages or any kind of sites as a replacement of ordinary tag clouds. Each tag in Tagul cloud is linked with an URL and is "clickable" that enables visitors to use it for navigation."

Introduction to W3C Widgets - QuirksBlog - 0 views

  •
"Essentially, a widget is a local HTML/CSS/JavaScript web application. A mobile phone user downloads a widget once, and from that moment on he has a web application stored locally on his mobile phone. Although currently widgets are mostly used for relatively limited functions such as clocks, RSS readers, or Twitter or Flickr clients, as well as for games, there's no theoretical reason why they couldn't contain a complete, complicated, JavaScript-heavy web application; for instance a mobile-optimised spreadsheet application."

Canvas Tutorial - Introduction - 0 views

  •
Welcome! In this tutorial, we're going to create a breakout clone that you can play in your browser, using javascript and the element. In order to use this tutorial, you'll need to have a relatively recent version of Firefox, Safari, or Opera. You cannot use Internet Explorer, because Microsoft hss decided not to implement the element in it. Before you read any further, click on the "run code" button on the left to play the game that we'll end up creating. On every page, you'll be able to click the "run code" button to run the code we've developed so far. Every page besides this one has an editor in it containing the javascript code that will be run in the same box as the game as soon as you click the button. You can make changes to the code, and see the results instantly by clicking the "run code" button. In order to make our lives easier, I've included the jQuery framework in every page, which extends javascript in your browser with some useful methods. If you have any comments or questions, feel free to leave a comment on the "comments" tab.

Improvise - 0 views

  •
Exploratory visualization based on multiple coordinated views is a rapidly growing area of information visualization. Ideally, users would be able to explore their data by switching freely between building and browsing in a flexible, integrated, interactive graphical environment that requires little or no programming skill to use. However, the possibilities for displaying data across multiple views depends on the flexibility of coordination, the expressiveness of graphical encoding, and the ability of users to comprehend the structure of their visualizations as they work. As a result, exploration has been limited in practice to a small fraction of useful visualizations. Improvise is a fully-implemented Java software architecture and user interface that enables users to build and browse highly-coordinated visualizations interactively. By coupling a shared-object coordination model with a declarative visual query language, users gain precise control over how navigation and selection affects the appearance of data across multiple views, using a potentially infinite number of variations on well-known coordination patterns such as synchronized scrolling, overview+detail, brushing, drill-down, and semantic zoom. Improvise has been used to build numerous visualizations for exploring information including election results, particle trajectories, network loads, music collections, the chemical elements, and even the dynamic coordination structure of its own visualizations in situ. This last technique-integrated metavisualization-is unique to Improvise.

#41: WordPress as a CMS - 0 views

  •
We once did a poll asking people what their favorite CMS was. WordPress was a run-away winner, but also got many comments of "WordPress isn't a CMS!!". Well clearly, in the strictest sense, WordPress is a CMS as it "manages content". But is WordPress really only suited for blogging, or can it be used for more traditional non-blog sites? In this screencast I attempt to show off a number of WordPress features that make it very "CMS-like" in my opinion. Including page templates, dynamic menus, parent-child relationship pages, and using posts as ancillary content.

The fallacy of community - New Marketing and Social Media (Abraham Harrison) - 0 views

  •
The unfortunate truth is that the term "community" is now so overly used and utterly misconstrued that it has become meaningless as a way of capturing the true essence of what it really is. It has now become a catch all phrase often used by social media strategists to describe an ideal that doesn't exist. It's become a presumptive description of customers or of end users in whatever form they come in, positioning them as already wanting to connect to a product line or a company. Many in social media end up contributing to this echo chamber, maintaining their standing in online discussions all the while causing damage to the concept as a whole.

RSS 101: What, Why, and How | 21st Century Connections - 0 views

  •
What is RSS? RSS, which stands for Really Simple Syndication, is an XML-based format for sharing and distributing Web content, such as news headlines. Using an RSS reader, you can view data feeds from various news sources, such as CNN.com, including headlines, summaries, and links to full stories. RSS, part of a family of web feed formats, is also used to publish frequently updated content such as blog entries, news headlines or podcasts.

Born with the Chip - 5/1/2004 - Library Journal - 0 views

  •
Librarians have adapted amazingly well to the challenges of an Internet-enabled, web-dominated world. It's been quite a ride as we worked with digital content, learned new search tools, and strived to get our many and varied systems interconnected. Now the roller coaster really begins as we deal with the next generation-those "born with the chip"-who have grown up in the 1980s with computers and don't think of them as technology. They are part of their cultural DNA.

A List Apart: Articles: Take Control of Your Maps - 0 views

  •
We live in the era of Google Maps. What started off as an impressive refresh of Mapquest-style maps now fuels web mashups. With APIs official and unofficial, Google Maps is simple enough for front-end designers to embed and for back-end programmers to target. Along the way to becoming nearly ubiquitous, it has played a major role in the "democratization of mapping." For the practical developer who wants to add geospatial information to a site or application, the Google Maps API has been an easy call. But, perhaps no longer. As websites mature and the demand for geographic applications grow, the old mashup arrangement is starting to chafe. Mapping components are more and more vital, and so we demand greater control, expressiveness, and functionality from them. Fortunately, as in many aspects of internet technology, an ecology of open source online mapping tools has emerged alongside the market leader. It is now possible to replicate Google Maps' functionality with open source software and produce high-quality mapping applications tailored to our design goals. The question becomes, then, how?

Gov 2.0: It's All About The Platform - 0 views

  • But as with Web 2.0, the real secret of success in Government 2.0 is thinking about government as a platform. If there’s one thing we learn from the technology industry, it’s that every big winner has been a platform company: someone whose success has enabled others, who’ve built on their work and multiplied its impact. Microsoft put “a PC on every desk and in every home,” the internet connected those PCs, Google enabled a generation of ad-supported startups, Apple turned the phone market upside down by letting developers loose to invent applications no phone company would ever have thought of. In each case, the platform provider raised the bar, and created opportunities for others to exploit.

GNU Radio: the open-source software defined Radio - 0 views

  •
GNU Radio is an open source Software Defined Radio (SDR) project that was started about ten years ago by Eric Blossom, an electrical engineer. The main idea which is behind this project, as its founder says, was to turn all the hardware problems into software problems, that is move the complexity of a radio equipment from the hardware level to the software one, and get the software as close to the antenna as possible.
