This is just brilliant, Miley Cyrus needs to take an African American studies class!!  The writer first conclusion is that Miley has a 'problematic view of what "black" is'. Well all her butt shaking, drug referencing and down right attitude seems to me like she obviously knows what shes doing. This article goes into depth via an interview with an African American Studies Professor and his opinion of Miley Cyrus and how her video 'We Can't Stop', appropriates black culture.

I guess Miley has some new photos out that are pretty risque.  This post just writes about how Miley is all about the controversy and getting people to talk about her.

I agree with the post, i guess is easy to say that Miley is always fame hungry and wants people to talk about her. But surely if people keep talking about her won't they just get bored.

This blog post talks about how Miley Cyrus is a genius because "she doesn't just talk like a bad girl, she behaves like one...if you're a musician, that's an incredible place to be."  Sinead O'Connor also wrote a letter to Miley about empowerment.

I feel Cyrus' response to this letter so shocking by talking about Sinead O'Connor having had mental illness and re-tweeting post O'Connor said whilst mentally ill. It appears O'Connor meant well and Cyrus' reaction was uncalled and down right mean. This however may be said for the shock value that it is been made clear Miley Cryrus is all about now!!

Zoe, I agree that Cyrus's response was awful--that rather than deal with issues, she taunts and resorts to attacking her for her mental illness, which especially bothers me.

Hanson argues that at this point in pop music, artists like Miley have nothing to rebel against to make them artistic -- Miley has to go full circle and just make sex, music, and performance ugly.

Bastille does a very cool cover of Miley's "We Can't Stop" and change the lyrics up a little bit at the end and include some of "Achy Breaky Heart" into it. One of the comments under the video points out how they are using the intro to "Lose Yourself" by Eminem to suggest Miley is "losing herself". 

I love Bastille and I love this cover! I also liked how they changed up the song and made it a comment about Miley herself.

The article discusses the impact of hyper-sexualisation in music videos and magazines and the negative effect they have on teen girls confidence, education and employment. The article also refers to 'video-vixens' such as Miley Cyrus and Rihanna who can be seen as 'toxic role models' according to writer Liz Jones.

Yeah Miley has gone too far this time!! I think it is worth noting that the section where she was smoking a joint had been censored from TV. But why was it censored from US Television? Plus it begs the question of whether TV needs to have tighter restrictions on what should be seen and what should not.

I posted this article in response to the articles about Miley Cyrus smoking weed on stage. This is Lady Gaga doing the same thing and like Cyrus she is also in Amsterdam. I don't understand what the fuss is about it's legal in the Netherlands so really why bother? These artist never smoke tobacco or drink alcohol on stage and these are legal substances in most places, plus they would impare their performances which fans pay money to see. I would be so annoyed that I payed money to watch an artsist get high on stage and then perform not because its predominately an illegal substance but surely they want to be at their best and their fans want to see them at their best.

I agree that people may have gone overboard with miley when you compare her to gaga because she has done the exact same thing. I think the reason for this is because people still have this goody-goody, disney image of miley and cannot still tear themselves away to look at her in this new light. Also Gaga never started out the same way as miley so i don't think people really care if she smoked weed or had a drink on stage, therefore i think origins play a big role for the perceptions of people in relation to artists such as miley and gaga.

Miley Cyrus is featured in Mike WiLL Made-It's new music video for "23." Caught my attention because someone posted this on Facebook, saying the following: "Miley Cyrus... No one wants to 'get like you.' Sorry sweetheart."

Ha! I love how much I agree with that person. I watched this video the other day and found it just awful. She says how she wants to shock people and I think with every video that comes out, she does shock that little bit more. But the shock isn't a positive thing. People are starting to get irritated with her more than anything, I know I am and eventually, the shock and irritation will make people lose interest in her. It is likely that people would have got bored of her had she stayed her usual Hannah Montana self, but at least she wouldn't have been irritating. No matter how hard she tries, she's always going to have a part of her Disney past to her name, similarly, no matter what she does, these publicity stunts she keeps pulling are going to be with her for even longer. The person she is now, she isn't going to want to be her forever and one day she will wake up and realise what an idiot she's made of herself. She'll also realise that this 'reckless persona' that she's made is going to be MUCH harder to shake off. Sorry, that turned into a little bit of a rant. I just have a lot to say on Miley Cyrus!

I agree with you Gina, but i think what the problem is, is that despite people becoming bored and irritated by her people want to see what see does next. Is it going to be more outlandish or shocking than the next? And that is what i think Miley herself counts on. Like she said in her new documentary trailer, she'd rather be talked about for two week than two seconds. So in turn i think that she see's any publicity, even if it's bad publicity, is better than no publicity at all.

Here is a new interview with Miley Cyrus posted by the NY Daily News. In it, Miley shares information about the "Wrecking Ball" shoot. Interesting read, I'd say; contains details I didn't know about the making of the music video.

I think this article is really interesting but at the same time it makes me view Miley Cyrus is a skeptical light. I feel that she's often contradicting herself, making all her shock and awe tactics seem, to me, to be a very childish and not very well thought out publicity stunt.

This is probably the WORST article for someone like me to read. Purely because I just LOVE Taylor Swift and couldn't hate Miley Cyrus anymore if I tried. Whoever wrote this is obviously just basing their facts off of the stuff that is touched upon in the media, particularly in relation to the songs Taylor Swift writes. 1. Oh Taylor's songs lack depth? And Miley's don't? Turn on the radio and listen to some of the trash they call 'music' on there and then come back and say that again. Yes, she writes about breakups but at least she can say that she experienced her songs unlike the crap that most popular artists sings who's lyrics were practically pulled out of a hat and strung together. 2. Not ALL her songs are about how she was victimized by her exes, they just so happen to be the ones that make it to the charts. For example, 'Back to December' was written about her previous relationship with Taylor Lautner and that she was wrong for hurting him etc. 'Better Than Revenge' is claimed to be about Camilla Belle after she quickly hooked up with Joe Jonas after he and Taylor split. Her first hit and most famous song 'Love Story' isn't even about a break up! 3. People criticize that Taylor is predictable because she only writes songs about break ups, well if that's so then why doesn't the public gather together and get her non-breakup songs on the charts? Why? Because they prefer the breakup ones. 4. Miley is a self-absorbed, loud, ex Disney star who is trying to break away from her Hannah Montana image and is only making her image worse.

Selena Gomez has totes had her fellow teen queen's back as she raunches it up, but it sounds like she might not be Team Miley!" - Perez Hilton Just thought this was interesting given the link I shared last week regarding the Lorde/SelG. feud. Didn't Gomez herself state that gossiping and dissing other women is not feminism? Hmm.

Camille Paglia argues that the problem with Cyrus's performance wasn't that it was "disgusting," but rather that it was unsexy ("atrocious"), and that subversion and sexual liberation need limits and can't rely just on shock.

I might add that I think Paglia is largely right, but then again, wrong: Isn't she mis-identifying Cyrus? Cyrus was out for shock, not sexual liberation (in my reading). She's not trying to be the next Madonna. (If you read other Paglia arguments, a recurring theme is: "This new artist isn't Madonna.")

Camille Pagila is at it again! Although our class discussion is currently focused on Lady Gaga, I found this article Pagila wrote about Miley Cyrus interesting. Pagila does mention the focus on sex in the music industry and credits Madonna as the executive of such an image, in the most positive way possible. Pagila described Gaga as the striking end of sex and gender. Here, Pagila claims that pop music/culture itself is on the exponential decline. Don't forget to read the comments, they're quite amusing, actually!

A study of visits to online news stories found that Americans were 12 times as likely to visit an article about Miley Cyrus than Syria. This trend is despite news venues publishing 2.4 articles about Syria for every article about Cyrus.

This is interesting. I read Gaga's tweet as kind of an ownership of stigma, like a "it's dangerous to hang out with me, look what happened to Miley" -- but that it's totally fine for what happened to Miley, because she chose to do it. Perhaps this is what Bauer and Halberstam are both getting at: our abilities to choose, and re-narrate stories.

The quote Miley uses "People are going to talk, might as well make them talk for two weeks instead of two seconds" Is a really interesting take on why celebrities have overdramatize things.
