In collaboration with CORAF/WECARD and Canada's IDRC, IITA will support 20 individuals for PhD and masters research in agriculture for development in West and Central Africa. Applications are invited from qualified individuals in Chad, Dem Rep Congo, Sierra Leone, and Togo who are currently registered in PhD. or masters programs in recognized universities, and who are not more than 40 years old. The program particularly invites applications from women. The accepted applicants will be offered coaching and training through IITA to build their research knowledge and skills.

ABIDJAN, 17 September 2015 - The European Union (EU) will contribute an additional EUR 16.8 million in support of the efforts by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) to rehabilitate and make fully operational 11 vocational training centres and agricultural schools in Côte d'Ivoire. The financial contribution was confirmed today during a signing ceremony held in the capital, Abidjan. The project, worth in total EUR 29 million and being implemented by UNIDO, supports the vocational training system reform in Côte d'Ivoire. Since its inception in 2012, UNIDO, in cooperation with the Ministry of Employment, Social Affairs and Vocational Training, has provided over 4,000 young people with certified training in line with the demand of the labour market, and helped with the capacity-building of governmental officials and management personnel in pilot vocational centres. Jean-Francois Valette, the EU Ambassador to Côte d'Ivoire, highlighted the importance of expanding this project in order to further decentralize employment and vocational training, as well as support the participation of women in vocational training. "By helping improve the vocational training system and supporting the professional and social integration of the trainees, this project will pave the way for a reform of professional education in the country," said Marlen Bakalli, who manages the project from UNIDO's side.

The UNESCO-UNEVOC e-Forum is an online discussion board where TVET experts from around the world can share information and knowledge about different aspects of TVET. In the e-Forum, participants have the opportunity to - discuss relevant issues for TVET policy-makers, researchers and practitioners; - announce international conferences and workshops; - inform colleagues on publications and other resources; - inquire for materials that would be useful for their work, and that may be available abroad, e.g. curriculum materials, samples of legal texts, etc.; - find partners for international cooperation in research and development."

Bank's e-institute for development has published a stand-alone on-line course to engage adult learners using a dynamic, online learning approach that connects users to the leading approaches to Agricultural Innovation System (AIS). The course contains eight modules including 'assessing, prioritizing, monitoring and evaluating AISA', 'agricultural research within an AIS' and 'rethinking agricultural education to support AIS'.

Global aid to education is dropping. After rising steadily in the first decade of the 21st century, aid to education fell by 10 per cent between 2010 and 2012. Yet almost 58 million children remain out of school, with girls particularly affected. The Millennium Development Goal of giving every child basic literacy and numeracy skills by 2015 will not be met.

As we shift our focus to the next programming period, it is increasingly clear that new solutions and new thinking are required to address evolving challenges. Even where FLAGs have been successful in achieving their goals in the 2007-2013 period, they will still have to reassess their situation and prepare new strategies that respond to the changing external environment,the new legislative framework, and take account of their own evolving capacity and maturity as agents of local development.
