40 Moving Examples Of #Iwishmyteacherknew - 0 views

  •
"Kyle Schwartz teaches third grade at Doull Elementary in Colorado. By now, you've likely heard of her-or at least one of her ideas, #Iwishmyteacherknew. Every now and then, there's an "Education" story that the masses take notice of-standardized testing, Michelle Rhee, Waiting for Superman, the flipped classroom, the iPad failure in LA, the testing scandal in LA, among others. The most recent to crossover is the hashtag #Iwishmyteacherknew, which is what it sounds like it might be-an asynchronous conversation (or rather, series of statements) illuminating the realities that many students face every day. On one hand, there's an inherent kind of other disconnect at work here that makes the whole thing a huge act of spectacle, while inviting frank discussions about privacy. We'll talk more about that in a follow-up later this week. To provide context to that kind of analysis, first the tweets themselves."

STEAMmaker Camp - Bridging STEM to Maker Education - 0 views

  •
"Our foundational belief is that teachers teach how they are taught. If we want teachers to teach from a foundation of learning by doing, then we want to provide professional learning in that same, or a very similar, way. STEAMmaker Camp is intentionally designed to replicate the highs and lows teachers might encounter with students over a year long program. Therefore, each camp is best designed as a multi-day event with each day running longer than the typical school day. This causes students to "hit the wall" that typically surfaces in the third quarter of school and teachers can experience how to remain positive and supportive in this type of environment, especially when they are also very tired. A trainer balances the fine line of guiding, role modeling, and directly instructing the participants, based on their individual and unique needs."

What's Your Hurry? 3 Reasons Slow Math is Best - Brilliant or Insane - 2 views

"As both a teacher and administrator, I often heard from parents whose children were exceptionally good at math. "My daughter already knows how to multiply four-digit numbers, so third grade math is too easy for her. She needs to be accelerated." There's lots of research to support acceleration as a strategy for gifted learners. The Acceleration Institute, part of the Belin-Blank Center at the University of Iowa, recently produced a report entitled "A Nation Empowered" which details the enormous benefits to accelerating a student when he or she is performing well above grade level. Researcher Jonathan Wei of Duke University says, "All students deserve to learn something new each day." In math, the obvious way to learn something new is to accelerate the instruction, letting the student go on to the next topic or grade level. But "learn something new" is not the same as "learn the next thing on the district's scope and sequence.""

iPad, the Photographer's Friend | Enlight Blog - 2 views

  •
"The iPad isn't famed for its photographic abilities. But in reality, it is one of the most useful devices a photographer could own. Everyone who takes pictures has a favored digital workflow. For some, it is entirely iPhone-based, using filters and careful framing in preparation for the latest Instagram triumph. For others, it is a laptop operation which takes hours of patient sorting, followed by adjustment and layering. But there is a third way. The iPad's processing power cannot compete with that of a computer, and its photographic credentials are less celebrated than those of a smartphone, and yet, you could argue that it combines the best of mobile and desktop."

"Apple didn't include SD Card slots or other expansion options in its iPods or iPhones, and pretty much ruled out third-party storage accessories. With nearly 350,000 apps and counting, the iPhone's maximum capacity of 32GB doesn't allow you to even scratch the surface of the App Store's catalog. Thanks to the Kingston for their most recent innovations of new Wi-Drive."

"Instagram is one of the most popular social networks for sharing photos and short videos, with official apps available for iPhone, Windows Phone and Android smartphones. As you might expect, a number of iOS developers have taken advantage of this shortcoming by releasing their own third-party Instagram apps for iPad on the App Store. In an effort to save you the trouble of looking through the storefront yourself for these apps, read ahead for a roundup of four of the best Instagram apps for iPad… "
