Study: class podcasts can lead to better grades - Ars Technica - 0 views

  • Clearly, the note-taking factor contributed to the overall scores. As someone who was in college before podcasting became popular but after sending students home with PowerPoint printouts became all the rage, I know from experience that many students think that printed slides are merely notes in prepackaged form.
  • McKinney acknowledged that the students who downloaded the podcast simply seemed to do better with taking notes and paying closer attention to what was being said, as they were able to go back and repeat parts of the lecture they had trouble understanding. "It isn't so much that you have a podcast, it's what you do with it," she told New Scientist.
  • As for whether podcasts can replace professors, McKinney stops short of suggesting that all classrooms become virtual. She refers to them as a supplemental tool to a traditional lecture that can help students gain a better understanding of the material and also help free up professors from answering repetitive questions. The takeaway? Go to class, take notes, listen to the podcast, and take more notes.

The Educational Technology Site: ICT in Education: --> A Preview of 2DIY - 0 views

  • I like the idea that children could use this to devise activities which, rather than testing or extending their skills by doing the activity itself, does so by requiring them to design the activity themselves
  • For example, when creating a quiz they may have to think about issues like the path taken by the user, how to frame the question, show the scoring will work, and what sounds (if any) to use for the feedback.
  • News & Views A Preview of 2DIY By Terry Freedman Created on Wed, 14 Jan 2009, 09:33 Email this article  Printer friendly page Email the author Listen to this article if ("">"") { document.write (""); document.write (""); document.write (""); } I've just received a link to download the latest program from 2Simple. Called 2DIY (for non-Brits, DIY = do-it-yourself, a shorthand term for home making things like bookshelves for the home), it enables users to create their own games and exercises.I've had a quick exploration, and it is looking very good. Read on for a quick thumbnail sketch, and why I think you should look into it.Back in the 1990s I used to love looking at shareware games developed for the educational sector. Some of the games were quite fun, but the problem for me was either that the game wasn't really educational at all, or that it didn't quite do what I'd have liked. Unfortunately, I never had the time to develop my games programming skills in order to rectify the situation.I think 2DIY would have been a step in the right direction.I think the best way of describing the program -- bearing in mind I've had it installed for less than an hour -- is that it's the programming equivalent of a painting or desktop publishing program. What you have  is a suite of specialised  tools, and you can use them to build yourt own games and activities. You can see from the screenshot that the range is quite extensive. The manual is easy to use, and there are videos and examples available. It has the ability to let you import pictures or select from a range of ones provided. Indeed, there is quite a lot of control over what your completed game or activity will look like. What's more interesting to me, however, is what boxes it ticks if you put it into the hands of youngsters -- and I use the term "youngsters" rather than "children" for reasons which will become apparent

Beware of School "Reformers" - Alfie Kohn - 0 views

  • To be a school “reformer” is to support: * a heavy reliance on fill-in-the-bubble standardized tests to evaluate students and schools, generally in place of more authentic forms of assessment; * the imposition of prescriptive, top-down teaching standards and curriculum mandates; * a disproportionate emphasis on rote learning—memorizing facts and practicing skills—particularly for poor kids; * a behaviorist model of motivation in which rewards (notably money) and punishments are used on teachers and students to compel compliance or raise test scores; * a corporate sensibility and an economic rationale for schooling, the point being to prepare children to “compete” as future employees; and * charter schools, many of which are run by for-profit companies.
  • Almost never questioned, meanwhile, are the core elements of traditional schooling, such as lectures, worksheets, quizzes, grades, homework, punitive discipline, and competition.  That would require real reform, which of course is off the table.

Teach Science and Math: Why Use Technology to Teach Science and Math? - 9 views

  • After four weeks of providing staff development and in-class support regarding how to use these data loggers, with the eight science teachers in the school. The science teachers began to come up with strategies and techniques on their own for integrating CBL Probeware data loggers in their lessons. At the same time all the teachers confided in me that they had all agreed in advance that using this technology was a waste of time and that they would resist every step of the way.
  • Their minds were changed as they discovered their students were more interested in science experiments, grasped the technology quickly, better understood concepts, and were able to make connections with other concepts. The teachers also found out that they were not behind in their curriculum and students scored better, on average, on chapter tests
  • Instead of resisting technology, the goal should be to harness the technological energy in students and become a guide for the best ways to use technology to learn.

The MET Research Paper: Achievement of What? « The Core Knowledge Blog - 3 views

  • A new study by the Measures of Effective Teaching (MET) Project, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, finds that students’ perceptions of their teachers correlate with the teachers’ value-added scores; in other words, “students seem to know effective teaching when they experience it.” The correlation is stronger for mathematics than for ELA; this is one of many discrepancies between math and ELA in the study. According to the authors, “outside the early elementary grades when students are first learning to read, teachers may have limited impacts on general reading comprehension.” This peculiar observation should raise questions about curriculum, but curriculum does not come up in the report.

iOS 5, iCloud and Education: To what degree will iBenefit? - iPads in Education - 0 views

  • Typically in a school scenario that will be when they are left charging overnight in a cart. Score one for IT administrators.
  • AirPlay mirroring will now allow anyone with an iPad 2 to project whatever is on their screen wirelessly to any HD television connected to an Apple TV. For those that aren’t familiar with Apple TV, frankly you’re in the majority. There haven’t been many compelling reasons to consider purchasing this $99 device … until now.
  • iMessage: OK, so let’s just call it Blackberry Messaging for iOS devices and leave it at that.

  • iCloud focuses on integration with apps as opposed to DropBox or SugarSync which are more of a generic file storage mechanism.
  • With iCloud, the student has a web based account and the document is automatically stored and backed up from the iPad. Further, the student can access the account off-campus and retrieve the document for further editing before returning it to the iCloud account.
  • Add to that tabbed browsing and speed improvements and Safari may finally be a capable mobile browser.
  • inadequacy of the mobile Safari text editor control has made it next to impossible to use popular text editing tools to edit blog posts or Google Docs. The jury’s still out on this feature but it appears that an enhanced version could still be included with iOS 5. This would be a dramatic and very desirable improvement.

Free Background Music around the Web | Longzijun - 4 views

  •
"This page lists different sites where you find and download free background music for your videos, presentations, websites or other multimedia projects. There are quite a few composers and musicians willing to let you use their music for free, especially for non-commercial purposes. It is important to distinguish between (1) music that you actually use for free and (2) music that is royalty-free (which means you can use the music but you have to pay a one-off licensing fee) and (3) music that you can download for free but that requires an annual licensing fee if you want to use it in your video (e.g., the deceptively named Freeplay Music offers this type). This page focuses on the first type and includes five sections."

"What causes climate change? Aside from some notable skeptics, everyone knows that it's caused by greenhouse gases produced by human activity. It's common knowledge today that emissions get trapped in our atmosphere and increase the planet's temperature. But where do these gases come from?"
