Tenured Faculty Less Likely to Focus on Teaching - 0 views

  • Researchers found that the few who focus primarily on teaching tend to share certain characteristics - including teaching without tenure.
  • A recent study by the University of Michigan on the work experiences of non-tenure track faculty found that one of their most common reasons for entering the profession was 'a love of teaching.'
  • Nevertheless, academic culture seems to prioritize research over teaching. Graduate assistants teaching undergraduate classrooms with hundreds of students and infamous practices like 'publish or perish' all point to a system designed to sacrifice quality instruction for research pursuits. As Boyer argued back in 1990, academia and its students would be better served by treating instruction as an equally valuable pursuit.

  • Boyer called for a revision of academic priorities, suggesting that the study of teaching methods should be as valuable as the pursuit of knowledge and the generation and testing of new theory.

Differences Between Online and Classroom Teaching - 0 views

  • Online teachers must often have all class material prepared and ready for students before the course ever begins.
  • In online classes, teachers are not required to be in class at any particular time, but must make themselves available to student questions on a consistent basis throughout each day to insure that students have a consistent resource for learning
  • Instructors who conduct classes online have to be more aware of certain teaching techniques and learning outcomes. For example, online teaching classes available through public high school systems as well as postsecondary institutions emphasize the need to facilitate student communication. Because learners aren't communicating in a classroom setting, they need to be able to conduct ongoing dialogue with peers and professors. Teachers may wish to assign group projects or set participation quotas to provide distance-education students with the same sense of community and learning support that classroom-based students experience.

Bloom's Taxonomy and Online Education: Overview of Education Theory - 0 views

  • Bloom's Taxonomy was developed on the premise that there are six levels of cognitive learning. All of these levels together represent a hierarchy. In order to reach the next level, you must master the previous level.
  • Bloom's Taxonomy can be used in virtually all parts of the online learning process, from writing course content to coming up with topics for online discussions. The University of Virginia's OnlineLearn resource recommends that teachers of online courses spend a block of time each day monitoring class forums to evaluate the effectiveness of current online discussions (http://onlinelearn.edschool.virginia.edu). They can then add discussion questions that will nudge students to think on a higher level of Bloom's Taxonomy.

The Wider Impact of Moore's Law - 0 views

shared by Amy M on 20 Jun 12 - No Cached
  • Moore’s original 1965 article described doubling the number of transistors every 12 months, rather than today’s popular form, which has microprocessor performance doubling every 18 months
  • A huge collateral effect of Moore’s Law was the creation of the commercial software industry as a meaningful force in the economy. This took place in two ways. First, the falling cost and wide availability of powerful processors greatly increased the number of computers in use, and thus successful software products could be sold in enormous numbers at modest prices.
