  • Now, I know from personal experience that the thought of creating a musical composition can overwhelm a “purr”son. (Oops!) In the past, I have tried too hard and nothing musical ever developed. So, since Al is a relaxed and laid-back composer, I will follow his example and listen for musical ideas in the world around me.

      This parapgrah is a cute way of letting students know that it is ok to feel a bit anxious about creating a piece of music.
  • Now after this mornings shower, I heard the annoying but rhythmic beat from my leaking bathroom faucet. In the kitchen, the whirring and pulsing sounds of the food blender were jazzy and invigorating. When turning on the TV, the first few notes that I heard became the beginning of a song. Fire engines and ambulance provided ALARMING possibilities. At last I was composing!!

      This paragraph fits very nicely into a Unit I always did in the F2F environment in 6th grade called Found Sounds. This might tie nicely to a F2F experience the students could have with composing in the classroom as a precursor to composing in their Software program.

  • We then have expansions of range and complexity as we move into the Baroque era. The Classical era gives us the emotional power associated with such composers as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Romanticism then transforms the rigid styles and forms of the Classical era into more individualistic stylizations. Tonality was at its peak during this period, then Impressionist music paved the way to the use of extreme dissonances in the music of the Modern era.

      Great resource that my students could use as a suppliment to course material as a study guide. This online resource highlights not only composers, but classical works and terms specific to music of the time periods.

    This is an online wikibook that may serve as a good resource for the students that will be enrolled into my class. My current course, which is part 2 of 2, covers music from the Baroque to 20th Centuries. Students in my class can use this resource for both part 1, and part 2 of my class as it covers music from Medieval times to the present. It covers terms, vocabulary, compositions and composers. I believe that my students and I could use this as a reference point to an overview of each musical period.

    "Last week, I had my first peer-to-peer teacher observation as a new assistant professor. After teaching at the college level for 10 years, I felt my teaching and pedagogy were sound, so I wasn't too concerned about being observed by a colleague. In a debriefing after the observed session, my colleague noted that the class seemed to be "teacher-centered." This was not offered as a critique, but simply as a statement. The statement, however, surprised me. I had always seen myself as a "student-centered" type of teacher. Since I teach composition, which is typically a student-centered discipline, I was confused. I wondered if we'd been in the same classroom and witnessed the same interactions or if we were using the same definitions of those often-used terms."

  • The new law signed today by the Governor ensures that parents and the general public can assess how schools across New York are performing. The law requires school districts and BOCES to fully disclose their evaluation results to the public and require requires the State Education Department to post and make widely available important data that will allow the public to analyze and compare how schools are performing. School districts and BOCES will also be required to notify and fully disclose to parents and legal guardians the final specific ratings and composite evaluation scores of the teachers and principals to which their student is assigned.
