I absolutely loved using Diigo.  After catching on, I found myself constantly wanting to highlight and sticky note something.  I think I added more personal thoughts to the readings than I would had I just printed them out and read them on paper.  Maybe it’s because these were pretty interesting articles, but I definitely made more connections than I normally do.  Usually, I struggle finding anything to say, or I’m too lazy to write annotations in the almost non-existent margins.  I was a little hesitant about Diigo, initially.  And, to be honest, I did not download the toolbar, because, well…I’m quite content with my present toolbar and I didn’t want to alter it.  But, I decided to use the Diigolet and that works great.  All I need to do is highlight whatever text I find intersting and I can make as many sticky notes as I want.  The only issue I had was re-starting the Diigolet everytime I loaded another page - I guess it doesn’t remain open from page to page?  Still, a very fun tool.

Liz has always been about putting people together in the most positive way, and innovations like Diigo aim towards people as well. Diigo (pronounced Dee’go) is a great social bookmarking site if you like to bookmark, highlight, put sticky notes (comments) on certain information you’re interested in when searching the web. Diigo is great for research. If you collect a lot of information like me, this is a great place to store everything. I know when I start to research a topic offline it usually means a tonne of books on the desk, bits and pieces of loose paper everywhere, writing pads, folders, paper, pens, highlighters. I think you get the image.  Diigo does all of the above and so much more online. And if that isn’t enough you can even blog from there too.  The tutorials are very clear and easy to understand.  I know I seriously sound like an infomercial right now but I think I’ve found a site I didn’t know I was looking for it.  Over the Easter break I’m locking myself away with a mission to learn how to drive it!

Diigo: Collaboration Beyond Bookmarks

Collaboration is one of the tenets of today’s web experience. The desire to share information, opinions and emotions adds tremendously to our online experiences. Social bookmarking sites like Del.icio.us have been a great way to discover information on the web. But sharing bookmarks in this fashion has limited the level of collaboration we could get to. Diigo, a site that combines social annotation with bookmarking, enhances collaboration in a few interesting ways. Highlighting the Important Stuff Typically I bookmark a page because there’s something on it that’s important to me. With traditional bookmarking I would have to surf the page to find the nugget I want. Diigo allows you to highlight the sections you want to focus on. Additionally, you can add “inline sticky notes” to highlighted sections in order to capture your thoughts right on the page. Sharing with Others Annotating pages is great for an individual wanting to keep track of important parts of the page. But the real value of Diigo is when you share your bookmarks and annotations with others. Not only can they see the page with your annotations, they can add to it if you choose to let them. And you can annotate theirs. In fact, you can set up groups that allow many people to create real conversations from information found on the web. Sharing Beyond the Page Creating conversations right on the page is great, but it’s nice to send the conversation around the web as well. Diigo lets you easily email links and annotations to people you think would be interested in it. Also, you can create a blog entry from it, or even send it as a tweet in Twitter. This is powerful as you’re able to extend the reach of the conversation and open it up for further collaboration. Diigo is packed full of functionality, and may take a bit to get used to. But if you’re looking to go beyond traditional bookmarking, you’ll want to check it out.

the first great thing about Diigo is that your bookmarks follow you wherever you go.  When you bookmark a site using your Diigo account, you can have access to it at work, home, the computer lab or library.  The other great thing is that once you bookmark it, you can share your book mark links with students and colleagues and they can all have access to your sites.   

The next big plus to Diigo is that you get to “tag” the sites you want to bookmark.  A tag is the classification system you determine so you can organize your bookmarks and find the link the next time you need it; this is known as a folksonomy. 

On the sticky note the teacher could ask questions and Diigo allows people to comment and reply to the questions on the sticky note.  Students could also add sticky notes for other students to comment on as well.  Another way to use the highlighting tool is that students could go through an article and highlight all of the vocabulary that they didn’t know and learn what it means prior to reading the article.  Or students could put sticky notes about questions they have when reading the text. 

SOURCING TIP: And Diigo was its name-O One thing I have been ranting about (online and offline) is the need for a tool that will allow researchers to seemlessly share their intelligence. Imagine (as I often have) the time that would be saved if I were to discover a resume online and then see a note left by one of my co-workers that reads, "Been here, done that and submitted the candidate." Wowzers! That would really cut-down on duplication of efforts wouldn't it?

Okay, so let me show you something  I really like and am recommending that research teams use - Diigo. I download the Diigo toolbar and when I come to a page that has been annotated, I am notified (see arrow). I can set this to show me only the notes I have left behind or, the public notes of others. And get this, once I set up my free web-based account, I share that info (my log-in) with my co-workers and all of the annotations we mark private are only seen by us.
